Hey guys, what happens if you mount a 2x teleconverter to a 2x teleconverter to a sigma 150-600 mm. I know you will lose TONS of light in the process, this is just for fun. Also, what happens if you use that setup to take photos of the moon.

Technically it’s possible to mount a teleconverter onto a teleconverter, right? Thanks guys! Also happy holidays everyone!

Some you can, some you can't. If you try with any of the Canon teleconverters, you can't. They simply won't attach to each other. I've heard that some of the 3rd party extenders do stack.

A few years ago I saw a magazine article in which a wildlife photographer did just that. A long fast prime telephoto with about 3 extenders. Needed two tripods, one under the lens and one under the camera body. The whole thing was over 3 ft long.
The picture was of acceptable/useable quality. A hawk perched next to its nest in a tree.

And look here for an experiment in overkill on this idea: http://petapixel.com/2015/02/05/stacking-five-2x-teleconverters-create-ridiculous-9600mm-lens/

Canon extenders will stack: http://shuttermuse.com/how-to-stack-canon-extenders-teleconverters/

Kenko and other extenders without a protruding element will stack easier.

But in most cases it is more trouble than it is worth and unless you are using a very high IQ lens with high end extenders the IQ will be poor.

I tried it with a Kenko Pro 300 2x and 1.4x then deleted all the shots since I just didn't like the IQ. Now I have the urge to try again, maybe I will do it after I make a store run and put up a shot later today or tomorrow.

I've tried a Kenko 2x with a Kenko 1.4x. I see no reason you couldn't stack two or three Kenko 2x teleconverters other than the image captured would probably be crap!!

Yes, I do have a Kenko 2x (and one other 2x teleconverter) but seldom use either simply due to image degradation. I do find the Kenko 1.4x gives reasonable results when used with a good lens. Teleconverters not only magnify the view they also magnify the flaws in lenses!!!

As far as Moon pictures go with a 2x teleconverter, I've found expanding the normal image by 2x in Photoshop gives an equivalent result. BenVista's Photozoom is also a good option (with lots of features).

You'll probably get a 2400mm focal length that renders nothing useful.

It depends on how long your arms are. You might need somebody at the other end to focus it for you.
Happy Holidays to you too.

I'm not sure why you'd want to photograph the moon with that outfit.

It might be easier just to get a super-zoom bridge camera in any case.

Expect a 25% reduction in resolution with each 2x TC. And you will lose 4 stops of light. Set your lens to f22, look through the viewfinder and press the DoF preview button and try to focus on something bright. Then imagine trying to shoot the moon.

And please post a picture of the tripod and head you plan on using. 😎🤔

Wouldn't you be better off using Extension tubes and dispensing with the glass tele's completely?

I don’t know what brand you’re shooting with, but if Nikon, and you’re looking for budget solutions - look at the manual focus AI-s lenses. Nikon has not changed the bayonet mount design since 1959 so the old glass will work just fine and is very affordable. The bodies from D7xxx up will meter the lenses for shooting either either priority or manual modes. D3xxx and D5xxx bodies will accept the lenses but you’ll have to rely on instinct or chipping to get a corrrect exposure.

MY first 300mm prime was the 300mm f/4.5 AIs and cost me $200. I used it for 18 months with great results and sold it for $225.

Have you ever used extension tubes? They are intended for close in photography when no macro lens is available, not telephoto use.

Get a Telescope. and your camera mount for it. I have mounted my Sony a6000 on my Mead Telescope. Shot the solar eclipse with it. Or a Mirrored lens they are usually 300mm, 500mm, and some 1000mm. They are light and compact. you can even put 2x extenders on them. Not Hubble telescope quality but the price is affordable.
