Floppy disc cards

I have a number of floppy discs with documents that I never downloaded to my ensuing computers. The external floppy reader, connected by a USB cord worked on older computers but on my Win10 desktop, Win7 laptop or Win Vista laptop, I now get "Disc must be formatted". How may I retrieve the documents without formatting the floppies (which I assume will delete everything on the floppy)?

I know this don't help except maybe in the "hope dept." but I just down loaded a couple of floppies onto W10.

It's not a problem with W10. The floppy disk system has serious problem with head alignment. If the disk was formatted by another drive there is a chance that a different drive won't read it. The best bet if possible is to borrow another drive and try. Once you can read it copy the contents to another media (hard drive, USB thumb drive etc..) If that's not possible I used to be able to adjust the drive head until it reads. This would mess up a totally good drive.

You can probably find someone advertising in your area that will transfer data from older media to something like a Thumb Drive or DVD. Check with a computer store. A local radio station likely has a Mobile DJ who has had to move music off albums onto CD.
