Breakthrough X4 CPL

Just received my 82mm Breakthrough X4 CPL. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but first impressions are good. I have mounted it with a 77mm step ring and nothing seems to stick. The B+W that this filter replaced would stick every time I put the step ring on it and usually required a filter wrench to get the ring off, and it was a B+W brass ring.

The B+W was replaced because it was binding and the polarizing ring wouldn't turn. Sent it back to B+W, but in talking with the rep. I don't hold out much hope of it getting fixed since it's not under warranty anymore. With the Breakthrough, the warranty is 25 years so the warranty is going to be good for longer than I am.

Good Morning Bill,

Hope your new purchase is just what you need. I've had great results from breakthrough. Question, with it's pros and cons, to which you just mentioned, do you recommend a step up ring and if so which brand?

I use a step up because I have an 82 mm lens, 2 77mm lenses and a 52mm, and didn't want to buy a polarizer for each. I have a B+W brass step ring fron 77 to 82 and a 52 mm aluminum from 52 to 77.

I would like to hear your comments after you have had a chance to use it. I have a Breakthrough ND and am considering the CPL.

Hands down, the Breakthrough CPL is the best one I have ever used in 25 years of photography.
