This lovely couple posed for me for about 15 minutes yesterday. Comparing the Nikon 70-300 lens @ 300 (first) with Tamron 18-400 @400. These two swam twenty feet one way, then 20 feet the other way for the longest time, giving me a chance to compare the shots.

Thank you for taking the time to make the comparison and then posting. I wondered how they compared.
Which Nikon 70-300 mm lens did you use? There are at least 3 models that I know of.
Tripod or hand held?
Jpeg or Raw?
How does it look on your computer?
It looks to me that the Nikon image is clearer with no CA. I use the AF-P model and have been very happy with the end results. Now only if it were a little longer :)

Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300 1:4.5 - 6.3G ED VR - It's come down so much in price this season that it's a lot of glass for the money. $396, it's about half the Tamron, but the extra flexibility of the Tamron 18-400 make both lens useful in their own way.

Here's a shot the 18-400 took @ 18.

That looks good!
I had the Tamron 18-270 mm lens and it did very well at the wide end but failed to impress at the long end. As long as you weren't pixel peeping it was ok (People that shoot birds always pixel peep :) Looks like they improved at the long end with the 18-400 mm.

I am using the "other" Nikon AF-P lens (Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR).

What camera are you using?

Mine is a D5600. And both have pretty good glass. The Tamron is slower to focus, but the extra Wide Angle and the extra reach make it my go to lens if I'm not trying to catch birds in flight.
