Pricing in S Florida and Keys appears to be $400-$500 per hour. Does this seem high to you?

I’m not trying to denigrate anyone’s skill or experience or right to charge “what the market will bear.” Just caught me by surprise.

It doesn't sound like you have procured many services lately. Contact a plumber or electrician and find out how much it will cost you just get them to ring your doorbell. In my area it is $125.00 before and consultation or service is provided.

Are you saying that a plumber or electrician is worth more or less than a photographer?

I don't know about photographers as I never did or will hire one but I know plumber and electrician rate is only about $100 an hour including overhead.

If your toilet is clogged or your lights are out he is worth a lot more.

It really depends on whether I am having a major leak or my AC is out RIGHT NOW. When that happens, they are worth whatever they charge.

But to answer the OP. I think the $400-500 range is not something unheard of but of course there are less expensive photographers and I think there are even more expensive ones.

People spend thousands of dollars on dresses, venue, catering, cake, DJ, etc. but want to go cheap on the photog. But what is it you show friends and relatives, children and grandchildren? Not the menu or the DJ's play list. It's the pictures.
There is more to wedding photography than grabbing a camera and snapping some pictures.

I actually show nothing! Take it back I show them my wife. It's the spouse that is worth everything and not the damn dress or cake or food.

Dallas area is getting 2500 to 3500 for the dedicated wedding photogs. A wedding day is typically 6 to 7 hours 500 and hour isn't out of the norm. But I would think you would see a second shooter for this type work. In the few weddings I have shot I was plum beat after the last shot was taken.

You can find fauxtographers on Craigslist for $15/hr.

If I am shooting for 6 or 7 hours their better be some food and boos some where.
I have a buddy in the West Texas area that gets 5gs plus and they fly him to places like Cancun or the Bahamas for the wedding shoots. He gets 2 or three shoots like that a year.

You're supposed to feed them too? I thought as professionals on the job they shouldn't eat while working. I think it's OK to take them out to dinner afterward but not them eating during the reception which they are supposed to work. Even when I photographed wedding for free I don't eat during the reception.
