Lately, I've been experimenting with light by putting pets (usually dogs) in different lighting situations. Recently I did some shots for friends having them position their dogs in natural light with bright sun and/or shade with reflected sunlight, and inside with a dark background and a couple of bright "craft" lights. While I preferred what the sun gave me, the high ISO and subsequent graininess of the inside shots was kind of interesting, too. Maybe the poses made up for the grainy photo quality. BTW I burned and cloned my way to improve the dark backgrounds I was after to make the animals "pop."
I hope I got the labels right. Sometimes the graininess gives the location away, but the reflection in the eyes will do a better job.
Any thoughts on what I could do to improve these? I've been asked to do pet portraits for a fundraiser in early February, so I have a little time to make improvements to my technique. What I can't guarantee is having a sunny day.
Outstanding work Vicki. they are all beautiful, I you ask me which ones I prefer I would say the outside shade images, no reason, they just appeal to my eye.
These are superb images ! I like them all !!

They all look nice Vicki. I too prefer the ones taken in the shade. They seem to retain more of the detail of the dogs fur.
I think you have done a fine job with these. I don't think you will have any problem doing the fundraiser shoot.

Excellent shots. You got the dogs' personalities. The black background is perfect. Number two is a grin-inducer.
Beautiful portraits. Well taken.

I agree... wonderful images!!!!!
They all look good but the first and outside shade look the best. I would guess the color of the dog would have an effect on what light is best. Keep it up!
