I shoot a little PR, kids and family's and a few events.
I currently use a Nikon 610 with two zooms 28~70 f/2.8 and 70~200 f/2.8.
I'm thinking of going to a D750 for the lower light capability. I was also thinking a 24~120 f/4 would be a great general purpose lens.
Any suggestions for the other end? ......I prefer a fixed aperture.
All suggestions welcome....the lighter the kit the better.
Sadly I don't see mirror less being my solution at this time.

Please check out the Sigma 24-105 f4 Art lens. I do some weddings and event shooting and wanted a lens I could do almost, if not all my shots with. I looked at the 24-120 Nikon and found a lot of people loved this lens but a significant number did not like it. Then I turned to the Sigma and found almost universal approval. I bought that one and could not be happier. It is very solid, and very sharp. If you are interested in a wider angle though, going from 28 to 24 isn't that much of an improvement. For an improvement on your wide angle end, I would look at the Nikon 16-35 f4, or the Tokina 17-35 f4. The Tokina is a fine lens at less than half the price of the 16-35. The D750 is a great camera and you will notice good improvement in noise reduction in the ISO 800 to 1600 range with this camera.

I think there is kind of no difference in low light capability between the D610 and D750
To clarify low light capabilities...I mean focusing in low light .....the 610 has trouble in that range... I understand the 750 does not ....Am I wrong?

The D750 is better at focusing in low light. I like the low noise high ISO also.
Aha, yes the D750 has better autofocus system.

The D750 with the 24-120 is a great combo.

Is AF in the D750 better at F4 than the D610 at 2.8? AF usually happens at the widest aperture.
"The D750 with the 24-120 is a great combo."
Yes...... but which long lens to replace the 70 to 200? is there a 100 to 300 f/4 that is tack sharp?

Is this true?....I've not heard that before.

In most modern dslr cameras the aperture is opened to the widest point possible during focusing and then moves to the set aperture during exposure. This is done to provide the focus sensor with the most data possible from the intended point of focus.

Sell the D610 on ebay and put the income toward a D750.

I'm pretty sure my old zooms will not work "properly" on the 750 ?
There are issues with 28~70 f/2.8 ....not sure about the 70to 200
But yes that the way I'm leaning......I just wish the kit was lighter.
I owned a D610 for nearly a year, after the third time to Nikon repair for oil spots, yes oil spots, I took a beating and traded it for the D750 body...originally I had 24-85 lens on the both bodies...short time later I traded the 24-85 for the 24-120mm lens that you mentioned...that is my main lens now and what I consider my "walk around" lens....although a bit heavier than the 24-85, the photos it produces (if I do my job with proper focusing and exposure) are exceptionally sharp in my eyes anyway. I hang the camera on a Black Rapid sling strap and I can walk around all day with this combo over my shoulder and across my body.... Good luck with your choice but the D750 with the 24-120 as mentioned by others is a great combo.

Keep the 70-200. It should work fine on the 750.
