Can anyone give me their thoughts on this lens? I shot it on my D850 and it looks good.
Thanks to all in advance!
500mm F8 Manual Mirrored Reflex
This an old lense but looks to be in good condition. Because of only f8 aperture it is of limited use but if you buy it right you will enjoy it if the limitations are acceptable to you. Background will show circles which is typical of mirror lenses.

Typically they produce low contrast images unless its a very bright scene. Some don't like the doughnut shaped background high lights. I had one years ago and managed to get some decent images with it in ideal conditions. The fixed aperture adds to its limitations. Eventually I gave it up.
Good luck with yours.

Probably the sharpest reflex lens ever made. This and the Olympus 500 F8 reflex are still selling for very good money, most others bring far less. The Minolta 500 F8 AUTO reflex was the only autofocus reflex lens ever made, but lacks the sharpness of the Nikon or the Olympus models.
Nikon also made a 500mm F5.0 that was faster, but less sharp.
That said, no reflex lens can match the sharpness of any of the 500mm F4 or F5.6 primes, even the old ones. Bit they are much smaller and lighter.
I have the same Nikkor 500mm f/8 Mirror lens, also have an f/4. 500mm Sigma (Ex Military) mirror lens. The Nikkor is a little sharper than the Sigma. The short physical length of both lenses are an advantage over Long Focus lenses of 500mm.
Not a great fan of Mirror Lenses, they have their limitations.
My advice, stay clear.

I have both a Nikkor (not C type) and Tamron 500 mm f/8 reflex lenses. Both are very soft and not useable for any high quality photography. That said the Tamron is much easier to use, lighter, more compact, has longer hood and a tiny bit sharper than the Nikon.

You tried this lens on your D850 and you liked it. So?
I have its big brother, the 1000 fll. Great lens, and sharp enough for most scenes.
They are difficult to focus and hard to hold steady; a tripod will definately help. Consider this mirror lens as a novelty but not as an everyday 500mm lens. I own one and hardly ever even think of using it. If you can find the eyepiece adaptor, they can be used as a passible telescope (not for looking at the stars but as you would use a pair of binoculars).
sounds like you'll get some good images from this lens. manual focus is not always a bad thing. I use the Minolta 500mm auto focus reflex with good results. post processing can add contrast. here are a few samples.
I have a Nikkor 500mm f/8 and love it. It works great on both my film and digital cameras.

It is best to use support of some kind at the tripod collar and the lens hood !
Shot with the Sony A77II and 500 AF Reflex .....form bodypod.
