Try the software from the camera manufacturers.

GIMP? I don't use it, but tried it and got frustrated with it. I'm not sure if it processes RAW files or not. I use Photoshop Elements 14, I bought it for $50 at Costco. It does the things I want it to do.

Sorry, but it sounds like someone who buys a car and wants free gas because they can't afford it. $10/mo gets you want you need. That means you do without a six pack of craft beer, a cheap bottle of wine, or a ticket to a movie - once a month. It's not the software you can't afford, it's the camera.

You can always use the downloads from the camera manufacturers if all else fails. Did you really not expect to pay for software when you bought your camera and lens(es)?

My rant for today. Good luck finding something for nothing.

Gimp, Raw Therapy, FastStone, Artweaver are four of several I have used. I'm on a limited income too but I pay the $10 a month for LR. I use Nikons so I also use Nikon Capture DX-2 also free. If you have Windows 10 it's "Photos" has some limited but nice and easy features. Gimp amd artweaver won't do RAW the others will.

Gimp is in the process of adding raw conversions through other programs. Aside from raw conversion Gimp is a pretty comprehensive program. Most , if not all, camera manufacturers have free software to edit their file type. At the very least they will let you convert your raw files for use in other programs.

That said, if you are shooting JPG, Gimp or any of the others mentioned will work, all free.

Prior to getting Lightroom (I also tend to agree with other posters on the $10/month being a very reasonable investment) I used Corel's Paint Shop Pro for years. Not as robust as Photoshop but had more features than I ever used. Can be had for about $50. Corel offers free 30-day trial. If you don't like it, you don't have to own it.

It seems like you've never really tried the better freeware/open source programs, such as GIMP or Paint.net. For most photographers, these programs have all the editing tools and options they will ever need. Extensive selection of brush tools, layer manipulation options, adjustment curves, crop tools - it's all there. Direct customer support services won't be available obviously, but there are plenty of how-to and trouble-shooting tutorials to be found on the internet. To equate expecting free gas for a purchased vehicle with choosing to use an open source program rather than a paid program is absurd.

Get GIMP. Download it and play around with it. Lots of vids on YouTube to help you get started. If you don't like it, delete it. Nothing lost except some of your fun time. If you decide you like it, there are several tutorial books on Amazon.com to help you further your learning. GIMP does have a learning curve! If learned, I am told by experienced GIMP users that it will do almost all the things Photoshop will do. And, did I say it was Free??!!

Have fun learning whatever your final choice turns out to be! I wish you well.

If your camera didn’t come with this software, there are some free options available. One of these options is called UFRAW, and it’s designed to work with GIMP.

Photoshop is no longer for sale as a stand-alone program. However, through Adobe you can, with a very small monthly fee (cut out a couple of lattes or bottles of wine each month) of $10 you can obtain Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop for use on your home computer as long as you pay the monthly fee. Not many programs can compare to the use of these two and I know several software programs. If, however, you don't plan to be a very serious photographer, more of a snap-shot shooter, than there are probably several free programs out there you can try and most cameras come with software. I use a Mac and it comes with Photos and I believe that a PC also comes with some sort of photo program. The program you choose depends on where you want to "take your" photography in the future.

I agree except for "means you do without a six pack of craft beer..." Now, you have just insulted good craft beer. <big grin>. In my neck of the woods, a decent craft beer is at least $5/pint.....so that would only be two brewskis a month. lol.
