I miss the "barebones" kits that you could buy in the past from Tiger Direct. Newegg is not quite the same in that they have brands (motherboards, power supplies, etc.) that I do not recognize - I don't know if they are just new or if they are their in-house brands.
Hey there must be a Heathkit for computers, right? Who remembers building their own Heathkit "HiFi stereo amp.", back in the 60's? Who's old enough to know what "HiFi" "stereo" and "amp." mean? Certainly not my kids or grandkids!
I really liked those days of building high quality kits. Who remember these names. Heathkit, Knightkit, Fisher, Scott, Dynaco, Lafayette, I feel old, but those where the glory days. You could even build your own TV.

I built a Heathkit Color TV. It worked for a decade. Now gone.
You can, with some luck, actually still find some if this on EBay, most likely Heathkit, and theres a ton of vintage audio from those day on EBay but for a price, especially tube stuff.

Used to go to computer shows and buy the parts needed to build your own.

I played in a band with a guy who did that. I had/have a Fender 1965 pro reverb.
In the 70's I built a paia synthesizer, worked pretty good but didn't sound near a s awesome as a minimoog.

Yeah, I built a Heathkit transistorized amplifier. Also built one of their tube ones.

My dad had his own TV repair shop and he built most all of his own testing equipment from Heath kits. And oddly enough out last name is Heath.
This stuff is all over EBay, and the tube stuff brings top $$.

I have built many Heathkits and Knightkits in my earlier years, some for other people. I have also built many desktops up until about 2005. There is no money to be saved putting together your own machine anymore.
Save the enjoyment of just doing it yourself or building a very high end graphics or gaming it is very hard to save anything at all. Plus, if needed, dealing with warranty issues on individual components.
Here is an example
Acer Predator G3. I agree the case is hideous, but it was on a 3 day special sale for $1099. I did not hesitate very long. Super smooth machine. Boots WIN10 from a cold start in 23 seconds.
I'm still using the computer case that I keep upgrading the insides of...!! Right now I rather upgrade the camera even if its used. The computer still does Photoshop and that's all it manner.
