I'm experimenting and I think I've found the ideal distance, which is less than a foot. I appreciate all who have responded. These filters now reside in my filter case instead of a cardboard box full of culled filters.

I bought a few dozen new-old-stock filters recently. When culling them I discovered two "Star-D" filters. They are embossed with +1 and +2 designations. The front of the filter is convex, with the rear being concave. I have concluded that they are special-effect filters but at 49mm I have no way of testing them. My only 49mm lens is a prime, and it simply wont focus with these filters, which were made in Japan. I'd appreciate any information you may provide. I've searched online to no avail.

Thanks.

Star filters do show the effect that's in your avatar! They would be of use when using film, but now they are so easy to add to any pic in pp, there is really no valid reason on spending money on them!

They didn't cost me a dime.

Feel free to demonstrate your PP results.
