I have posted some of my veteran project images before, but I think this one has not been posted. WWII P-38 pilot from the China-Burma-India Theater (CBI).I made the abstract flag background in Photoshop.

I know so many want to think that no processing is somehow a thing to be admired, but I think the difference is what makes a dramatic portrait.

Very nice work, Cliff.

For those in the no processing boat, go buy a polaroid.

Very nice job Cliff. Those who believe in no post don't photograph for a living. I believe I do good original work but publications and clients want perfection which can be difficult if not impossible without post. Even in the film days we did a lot in the lab to enhance so I don't understand the no post thinking.

You are right, that's very dramatic, a definite improvement. Nice job.

You have created a very powerful portrait that restores what age has hidden away. Strength and resolve that are part of your subject's character are on display in this image, thanks to your editing. Your original portrait is well lit and exposed, but in the days of film would have been dodged & burned and had a little retouching before delivery for publication to try to achieve what you have done here. Very well done, Sir!

Purely my opinion. But I don't believe that any client would not be happy to have either of these portraits. Yes, the retouched onr is more dramatic, but the OOC pic is also note worthy.

I don't want to be seen as picky, but I think I would have preferred one between the two shown here. Nevertheless, that means that post would still have been necessary for my taste as well. Thanks for the comparison and for a great portrait!

I certainly understand. It is not being picky at all - just your preferences. But the family absolutely loved the processed version and the daughter told me that is exactly the way they see their dad. Of course they do not see any intermediate versions.

Which raises another point. I know some people talk about doing what the client wants. That is certainly true for commercial work, but for my portrait work people hire me because they see my stye and hire me for that. I do what I do and that is what they get. I shoot the way I love and process they way I want. If that works for them, great, if not, they go to someone else. I have never asked a client what THEY want. I am not suggesting that there is anything wrong with that, I just do not do it.

Just to make sure, I think you did great work and it's far above my ability. And I really learned from the comparison you supplied. Thank you for that lesson!
