OK so I'm gonna ask a dumb question is a speedlight and a flash the same thing my daughter got me a speedlight for my Nikon d5200 does it work the same as a flash

Speedlight is Nikon's nomenclature for flash. These are synonymous. Best of luck.

Hopefully your new flash is a "through-the-lens" model, better known as TTL. Study up on that.

Yes. The artificial lighting device known in shorthand as a "flash" means the same thing as "speedlight" (for Nikon) or "speedlite" (for Canon). It goes by other names, too, such as flash lighting device. Typically, this device mounts in the hotshoe of a camera.
