I’m guilty! I used a Canon sx40. Instead of using manual I used Scene Mode/Fireworks, OMG! I didn’t use RAW! (Though the SX40 can shoot in RAW with a little software hack from – http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK). Forgive me!

I used a canon camera on auto mode, from many posts I read that seems to be a sin.

Oh bull crap... Some people are so full of themselves and think they live on a petdestal..... A good picture is a good picture reguardless of HOW its taken....

I have a new SX40 coming Monday.... Got tired of hauling all those lenses around and sold my dslr and all. I test drove a 40 a couple times and was very impressed... How do you like yours ?

Thanks, Old Sarge! I was wondering if anybody would post any sx30 or sx40 fireworks pics, since I didn't really trust my sx30 for the task. I think those pics are AOK, although the exposure could have been a tad longer to make for bigger/longer bursts.
As far as the "sin" of using a Canon Auto setting, I find that my camera on Auto does a better job of calculating the proper settings than I do about 90% of the time anyway - this is why i have a camera with 'Auto'!
(Of course, I would probably not be regarded as one of the "rule followers" here either, what with my in-focus backgrounds, center-framed subjects and all - too "unprofessional" for the rigorous dogmatists.)

I like your pics, but if they were mine I would probably be inclined to violate some other "rules" by cropping them a little tighter.

Thanks for the posting!

I got my SX40 for the same reasons you did. Have had it for a short while but really like it. The zoom is fantastic, even the digital zoom. Thank you for your comments.

Thank you for your comments. Would you believe I did crop the photos. But when I re-sized them for the web the tight crop disappeared for some reason. I have to agree with you on the auto shooting, at 75 yrs old I'm not as steady as I used to be, and of course my vision isn't as clear either. But as Donrent says "Anytime you have a next day, its ALWAYS better"...

Thanks to one and all for your comments. Photography is so subjective it really comes down to what the guy taking the pictures likes or dislikes. And he surely won't post the ones he doesn't like. But even so, it is very helpful to get comments from others positive and negative, so again thanks for taking the time to respond.

Sarge: You're the man! We need an SX40 club. I'm going on a shoot next week and my friend asked me if I wanted him to bring an extra DSLR for me to use. I'm still smiling. No camera is perfect, but the SX40 comes close for those who don't earn their living taking photos.

Thanks for sharing.
