I think, in lens cleaner, it is diluted, however I am not sure what is used. If water, it might not be water only. I would think that "pure" (95%) denatured alcohol, which is used a solvent for glue, oil and other materials might be risky to use on lenses. Partly I am concerned because I am not sure what is in the other 5%. Some of the additives make it indigestible. However, different manufactures use different additives. It may be possible that one of those additives might cause problems on a lens. Then again maybe not. However, the per-use cost of purpose made lens cleaner is so low as to make the savings not worth the risk.
Keep in mind that I do refill my wife's nail polish remover bottle from a gallon jug of acetone I keep in the shop. I mean, what they charge for tiny bottle of remover, now THAT is insane!

ROFL! I used to do the same thing for my first wife, although I used either a quart or a pint can (small garage). I do know that, at one time, rubbing alcohol was 5% glycerin. What a mess that made on my binoculars! You could buy rubbing alcohol marked “without glycerin) if you knew which stores carried it.
