Keep trying to get to where I want in B&W. Not there yet but getting closer. This is a 5 Shot HDR processed in LR and then worked on in various Topaz filters. The B&W version was converted in NIK Silver Efex. Which one do you like better?

Tom, This post shows some reasonably good effort and nice results. However, I think you are overcomplicating things a bit. First, I'm not sure HDR was needed for this scene. Shooting in RAW, exposing to the right, and making initial adjustment in the RAW processing portion. Then, bring into PS for the black and white conversion. All of my digital photographs converted to black and white are done the way I outlined.

Black and White, much more dramatic. You've got room to edit with some fringing in the ridge on the left and shadows that could really use a pass with a brush tool to raise exposure 1½ to 2 stops to bring out highlights in the shadows.

Wonderful work, both lovely in their own way. I have yet to do any “formal” post processing other than on my camera but am looking forward to a gift of LR / PS CC from Santa! You all inspire me with the amazing results that you achieve. Thank you for sharing.💕

B/W. It is refreshing from the usual which even HDR can't produce.

You have a breathtaking view with interesting light and clouds. There is a great deal to take in (nearly overwhelmingly busy) and I wonder if stronger impact could be found by taking advantage of light and shadow rather than going for maximum detail. But that is your choice for how you wish to present the image.

For me the strong blue of the sky is competing with the grandeur of the canyon. In the black and white I like the sky much better because it's just a supporting player; it's not shouting, look at me!

However, in my opinion all the details and lessening of the shadows works against you in the b&w. Often when a b&w photo is full of tiny details with no place to rest the eye and no direction of shadow or light to follow through the image, we can get lost. The parts become less than the whole.

It would be very interest to see the b&w reworked without the HDR and with thought to a study of shape, shadow and light rather than maximum details.

Thanks for the opportunity to critique!

If the moody GC is anything, it is colorful.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally really like the Black & White. I think you done a good job. Dono if I would have rendered it quiet the same way (so what). Yours is really good. I have a bad attitude about photo's of the Grand Canyon and Sunsets...... It's hard to take a picture that does not capture it's grandeur in some way. I can understand wanting to do it but I don't. Cause no matter what I do... prolly never feel it perfect.... I know I digress... I would be proud to hang a print of your Black & White :) Keep shootin em up :) have a great day. Thanks for sharing.

Either belong in Arizona Highways magazine, but I gravitate to the B&W because of the way the light lays across the scene. Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.

You go to the Grand Canyon, one of the most colorful canyons in the world most likely, and you want black & white? LR does a wonderful job of converting color to BW for the most part. If your photo, however, has only midtowns in it then the conversion with any program will be difficult unless you can pull the tones up and down the range. I definitely prefer color in Grand Canyon photos.

My preference is the B&W which evokes more emotion to me than the color version.
