here is the exif data for the raw file....in the attachment. I was hoping to be able to shoot most files with the automatic settings - I'm not crazy about having to mess around with shutter speeds and aperture and iso. with my FX 1000, I was able to get great photos with the IA and IA+ settings.

You did a good job of denoising. I downloaded and converted your raw file, here it is without processing. I see what you mean about the noise. The only thing I can think of is you shot at a high shutter speed which caused the iso to be unacceptably high.
However I can't get any exif data from your raw file, which would show me exactly what your shutter speed, aperture and iso were. Do you have any unprocessed jpg shots that you can upload and remember to click a check in the box just to the left of "(store original)"? Also these are large files, UHH will only upload a jpg file that is 20MB or less. I resized the jpg converted from your raw file as it was 32MB.

Hi, strangely I extracted exif data from the raw file and came up with different numbers, f5.6, 1/25 sec. It didn't show an iso number but did say high gain and low contrast, so I thought maybe you had used one of the creative modes like night shot.

I still have a Lumix LX5 which was my first decent digital camera, and with the f2.0 aperture at 24mm, I was able to get very good low light shots in auto mode at iso's less than 400 and virtually no noise.

But using your EXIF data, if f3.5 and iso-1600 was as low as you could go, you wouldn't get clean low light shots. The camera may have other attributes, but unless the aperture can open to f2.0 or thereabouts, low light won't be one of them. iso-1600 is probably not going to look good on any point and shoot camera.

I have a bunch of cameras, bridge and dslrs and generally try to set aperture, shutter speed and iso. The only time I use auto iso is if the light is shifting quickly due to clouds moving, etc. They are basically different tools for different shooting situations. I recently bought myself a Coolpix B700 bridge camera for the 4K video and the 1440 mm focal length. For those situations it will beat my D7000 dslr.

Regards,
Bob

Check to see what your high ISO denoise feature is set at. The recommended setting should be at low. If it’s set on high, and you’re shooting in poor light, in auto, the camera will raise the ISO until it can get a properly exposed image, or what it thinks is properly exposed. The problem is, if the setting is on high, you’ll smeary, grainy looking images.

Here is a thought, LParis. I was looking at my zs50 manual yesterday and I noticed a caution that advised not to have your cell phone close to the camera when shooting pics. They advised that could create noise.

I’ll have to check my ZS60 manual to see if they recommend the same thing.
