This was taken in September of this year. My SO was out in the kayak doing some night fishing, and as always I was sitting on the shore listening - it was so dark i could not see my hand in front of my face - in case he ran into trouble and needed help... although, honestly i do not know what i would do to help him since i could not see him.... but I always listen when he goes out at night. I hear him talking to me "get your camera" -- me thinking : "get my camera? have you lost your mind, its pitch black out here, get my camera... right"... he says "babe, there's something in the water headed your way, go get your camera, please". I oblige, begrudgingly.... quickly up my ISO and ask what and where I'm supposed to shoot. he tells me "something is coming towards you at about 30 yards, and is now at your eight o'clock".... still not able to see anything through the viewfinder, i press my shutter button and hold it down while slowly panning the area in front of me from "eight o'clock to my four o'clock" --- not expecting to catch anything , nevermind having anything even remotely in focus, Much to my surprise and amazement, this is what I caught. A beaver. There is quite a bit of noise in the photos, but for being nearly 10 pm and pitch black out, I am pretty happy to have gotten any images at all. SO asks me if I got it and what the heck it was... All the while I'm thinking to myself, if I dont know what it is, and I cant see it, I would be getting myself out of the water...LOL, silly men.
Enjoy.
these were taken with my D5100 - 18-300mm (all the way out at 300) F6.2 1/60 ISO 8500
Not too bad, especially considering the conditions you were shooting in.

thank you,
Yes I would have much rather have seen, and captured him in the day... but I got a couple of shots, and a humerous story, so I'll call it a win.
Perfect example of storytelling through photography. How amazing that you were able to capture what you did under those conditions!
Not bad for so late at night!
Love it with the story... it makes it. Flash fired?
Nice work, Heather, and they usually splash their tail making a very loud noise to frighten you away, and it also lets the other beavers know that danger is nearby!
