I’m fairly new to photography and I have a canon 600extll flash still in the box. Also 2 Altura triggers. (Gifts) from my kids Not sure how all this works but do I need a transmitter and receiver too?

Welcome to UHH. As a Nikon guy I can't answer your question.
Not familiar with your brand but am aware of the Cognisys line. If it's like that than this is advanced image making equipment and involves taking a deep dive into photography. I'd advise you get yourself a mentor before going further.
Do you have an owners manual? If so that might be a good place to start.

i assume you want to use the flash off camera? If so, you use the pair - transmitter on camera and flash attached to receiver.
Sorry, I thought it was a camera trigger not a flash trigger. Multiple flash should be considerably easier.
Yes I would like to use the flash off camera!

I would get Canon's or Yungnuos trigger for that flash, as it is "custom-made" for that flash and allows you to get the most out of your flash!
Ook thank you hopefully I can send the other ones back!

There are some models that do both camera AND camera triggering.
Altura does make them for Canon.
Check yours. It may work.

You want the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT. It’s the wireless radio trigger that’s the equivalent of the Canon ST-E3-RT at 1/4 the price.
Thank you for all your help
The 600 is radio triggered by another 600 flash or the ST-3 transmitter. You can also get a Yongnuo copycat transmitter among other options. These allow you to use the flash either in manual or in ETTL (if specified). Others are triggers in manual only, meaning you have to set the power and settings on the flash by hand. The triggers only tell the flash when to fire.
PocketWizard Flex 5 and now the new Flex 6, allow on and off, manual settings or ETTL from the camera and still dial in compensation with an AC3 attached controlling up to 3 groups individually. I believe the ST E3 does also, but I am invested in the Flex system and it works well for me because I have a big mix of Canon speedlites and manual cheapies I employ. Starting with a rf 600 flash the Yongnuo makes great sense.
Personally, I like the option of changing settings from my camera instead of going physically to the flash and fiddling with it there. If you get to the point where you have multiple speedlites off camera, you will appreciate it too.
So for long term investment, look for ETTL capability and reliability and maybe firmware upgradability. Just like a tripod, buy more than you need now and you don't have to buy twice or more later.
