Lightroom import problem + solution

I'm using LR 5.7, so this may not be a problem for you folks who keep up with the times. It may not affect those of you who use Macs, either.

I went to import some pictures into LR today, and the program crashed. I tried a couple of times to no avail, went and edited a random pic and tried after, and it still crashed. LR has never crashed on me before.

I tried Mr. Google, and it turns out that if a) you're running windoze, and b) you have an android phone plugged in, and c) the phone is set to charge rather than one of the other options, then when you try to import, LR will crash. It's apparently a known bug, though I didn't know about it until today.

My guess is LR knows there's a phone attached but crashes when it can't get access to the pictures (because the phone is in charge mode).

Thought some of you might like to know, in case you hit the same thing.

I doubt this will affect many folks, but it’s outrageously good to know.

Your phone probably came with a charger and a cable that plugs into a wall socket. Dig them out, dust them off and henceforth use them to charge your phone. Then the charging process won't interfere with your computer or Lightroom.

Interesting. I've had that exact problem on my laptop and finally figured out to disconnect the phone. To me it seemed the computer was searching the phone as an available 'drive' to select for image import. I didn't research and initially feared my LR5 software didn't run on my Win10 laptop.

I have my charger in one spot, but if I need my phone near me and it's low on juice, I use the 'puter. This is the first time I hit this issue since I got LR several years ago, so obviously it's not a frequent occurrence. I've always thought it odd that you have to choose whether to charge an android phone or look at its file structure. It's the only USB device I've ever seen where that's true.
