Would like any suggestions or recomendations for a lens. Will be used in bad light in a stall of new babies with their mothers. Flash will probably be out of the question. Have a nikon 7200 and have no oroblem with getting an fx lens. Thanks

1.) What's a "stall" of new babies?

2.) what lenses do you have now?

3.) Why is flash out of the question?

If I understand your uses correctly, I'd recommend portrait lenses....

Primes with large apertures are useful, especially for candid shooting on location, where you have less control over backgrounds and the smaller prime lens is less noticeable and intrusive. On a D7200, 50mm and 85mm are ideal portrait lenses.... short telephotos that can largely avoid distortion problems that will occur with shorter focal lengths and are particularly an issue with portraiture. If you have plenty of working space or are looking to shoot tight portraits, choose the 85mm. If you have limited working space or are wanting to shoot looser portraits, full length portraits, couples or small groups, the 50mm is probably a better choice. These focal lengths are commonly available fairly inexpensively and relatively smalle with f/1.8 apertures, a bit more expensive and slightly larger with f/1.4 and in some cases quite expensive and rather hefty f/1.2 versions.

For kids and pets a zoom might be preferable. On a DX camera like D7200, I like to use a 24-70mm f/2.8 (it's not my preferred portrait zoom on full frame.... I switch to a 70-200mm f/2.8 for that).

In a studio situation where you are working with posed subjects and have full control over the background and lighting, other zooms with less large apertures can work fine. I sometimes use a 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6. The prime 50mm and 85mm lenses work fine in studio, too (on full frame, I usually use 85mm and 135mm instead).

With both the 24-70 and 28-135 Im usually very careful to not use any shorter than 35mm focal length, and try to keep to 50 to 70 range or 50 to about 100.

They will be race horse babies and if they are still real new a flash in a stall might spook them or upset the mare. After a few weeks i can catch them outside. I have a 18-140 and a 55-300. I might just try them first

Foals. If we'd known they were foals we might have recommended other lenses.
