A step up.
I have a Nikon D3400 with lenses that are good enough to take decent pictures. I want to take a step up camera-wise. What Nikon should I be looking at? Moneywise, I have about $1500 to spend. I mostly take street/urban photos but enjoy photographing wildlife when I get the rare chance.
Welcome to the Hog, a D7200 would be a good step up, good luck.
You may want to consider a mirrorless camera which would be more discreet taking street/urban photos and would also be appropriate for wildlife photos. However, if you have a few Nikon lenses with your d3400 you may want to consider either the d5600 or d7200 Nikon.
Hi Earnest,
You would be well served with a D7100 (dpreview 85%), a D7200 (dpreview 84%) or a D7500 (dpreview 86%). Given the dollars you are willing to spend I'd put it on a D7500 because of the "flippy LCD." I don't have the D7500 but I use the flippy LCD on my D750 all the time. I also use a D7100 for my grab & go camera and it does a great job. I don't have a D7200 but based on my experience with other Nikons, it should be a great camera as well. Let us know what you decide to get. Take care & ...

One step? D5600. Two Step? D7200 or D7500. But why only a step. Reevaluate your need and want and perhaps it's better to step up several steps.

For $1700 at KEH a Nikon D500. Best crop frame you can buy. That from a Canon shooter
There are a couple of things to take into consideration. As you move up in features, you increase weight and size. You need to be comfortable with the extra weight. Your 3400 is a discreet size but the the 7000 series and the D500 are significantly larger and more noticeable.
Another consideration is features. On the Nikon web site you can select the models of interest and see a comparison of all the specifications and features. If you can identify the features you will gain that are of interest to you, it can help you decide how far up the chain you want to go. You could also consider a factory refurbished camera. It should be as good as new and it will save you money that could be put toward a future upgrade or new glass.
When my best friend and I "stepped up" from our old DSLRs, I purchased the D5500 and he purchased the D7200. We both love our cameras. Whereas I will admit the 7200 is superior to the 5500 (but not much), I decided I liked the 5500 because of its compact size and light weight. Following good UHH advice, I put a little extra money into a good lens and I would suggest the same for you. Depending on how much of a professional you are, pick up each camera, see how it feels, check the button locations and go with the one that feels most natural.
Thank you everyone for all the information. It's quite helpful.
Thanks Al, but I own a D7100, D7000 and a D600 FF already, I don't need anymore cameras, except maybe the D500.

A refurbished D7500 fits the bill, or a new one.
Are you talking about a refurb or used D7200?
