I included "Best" in the title because the best drive, in my opinion, is the one that is most reliable. So, here are the top five most reliable drives. I'm glad to see that three of mine are on the list.

Samsung is the leader. Surprisingly. Followed by Seagate, WD, HGST, and Toshiba. All apparently good. Good reference article.

I haven't used Samsung hard drives, but I've found their SSDs to be excellent so I'm not surprised their HDs are highly rated. Seagate is my favorite, so I agree with them for #2, but I'd put Toshiba ahead of Western Digital.

Here’s the latest Backblaze reliability data referenced in the article: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-failure-rates-q3-2017/ you can draw you own conclusions...

This has the potential to be comparable to a Canon vs Nikon vs ???? discussion. My personal experience has been nothing but positive with WD, both speed and reliability. On the other hand, I've had troublesome issues over the years (30+ starting with a Heath Zenith Z-150) with Seagate. Lucky for me, noise warned me of pending doom and I was able to clone the drives before they died.

Since buying my Osborne in 1982, I've only had one hard drive failure, and it was a Western Digital. I've had a dozen or more Seagate HDs and they are my preferred brand. I must admit, however, that I don't fully trust ANY drive and always keep a backup.

When I did this search for the best hard drive a few months ago, Hitachi outranked them all by quite a margin. Things change?

My production computers AND my 16TB (12TB accessible) 4-bay RAID-5 NAS use WD RED HDD designed for NAS/RAID compatibility.
My 9 TB JBOD back-up array as well as my individual HDDs used for rotational backups are the much less expensive WD drives that are NOT specifically designed for NAS or RAID-5 environments - as I only spin them up once per month.

You do realize that Hitachi is HGST and that HGST is a wholly-owned subsidiary of WD, right?
