Has anyone here used SmugMug for selling photo's and, if so, is it a viable resource? Ease of using etc. info would be helpful. Thanks.

I tried their trial program. I found the menu system to be very convoluted, but then it might just be me. But I was a computer programmer for over 15 years. I wrote to them and got fantastic customer service. But, I did not feel that I should have to spend hours to figure out the menu system and decipher lack of documentation to display a few photos. Friends who are on the site tell me that sales are minimal, but that may be them. So, even with a 40% discount for a year, I decided not to take advantage of their offer.

So, for me, I am not going to use them and will keep looking for a program to display my photos.

I use it and am very happy with it. Their customer service is good. If sales are low its because of how the images are marketed. Smugmug doesn't do it for you and I know that if my "clients" are not aware of my website then they can't but the pics. I sell pics to amateur sports competitors so if the organiser doesn't promote the images in time or with links to the website or if I don't use social media as well then sales don't happen.

Good website, but takes a bit of effort to organize the folders etc. Something one should do in any event. Links with Lightroom and it is easy to syncronize. They have a fair selection of products, however, I never sold an image from smug mug, rather I use it to buy a finished version of my own photographs to give as gifts.

I use Image Event. Easy to use and can email albums which is what I like. Also a good off site for my pictures.

Aside from ease of use, I tried it for 3 yrs and found that it was difficult to cover the yearly cost with how much I sold. I had that site to sell my art work, & was not that successful, but sold wedding shots which just covered the cost of the site. I find generally belonging to an on line commission site like Art.com worked quite well..

Smugmug is a great company with excellent customer service. They host my website. I'm no computer guy yet I'm able to navigate through there website. When in Mountain View, California, visit them and get a tour of their facility.

I looked at art.com at one time but could never figure out how to get one of my photo's into a gallery I created. I may look at it again. How do you get a photo in there. I could never find a place to upload. Be interesting to know if I did something wrong. Thanks.

For an amateur who would like to share photos with friends or provide off-site storage, Basic Smugmug works very well and is economical. Not being professional, I have-not tried to sell from my site.
