Hi my name is Angelo, I'm an amateur, needing help on a good camera starting out, willing to spend 1500 dollars to get going, but first, Canon or Nikon. Thanks
Canon or Nikon? Yes! Nuff said
Both are good brands and you probably won't go wrong with either. Check the cameras and see which does what you want for the money and which feels best in your hands. Whichever you choose will probably be a long commitment because you will want to keep your lenses even if you upgrade your camera.

With majority of R&D money for all brands going into mirrorless, I would expand your brand set and look into the mirrorless.

If you can't make up your own mind by doing your own research, spend your $1500 on something else.
Welcome to the Hog Angelo, enjoy, and good luck.
It's your choice and there are others too. Both are excellent. I shoot Canon, but have owned Sony too.

Cannon - Nikon, Ford - Chevy? Personal likes. Go and handle a bunch. I shot hand guns and they are comparable. Some just fit you better. Explore what controls what and were it is located on the body and decide which works best for you. I was all Cannon up to the digital age and then switched to Nikon. Just felt like it worked better for me. Is $1500 your budget for camera and lenses or just the camera body? I professional I shoot sports with told me a long time ago, "A box is a box is a box. It's all about the glass."
I'm happy with my Nikons, but it seems many of the young amateurs are starting out with Canon. There is a Best Buy near our house that has many demo cameras available to just pick up and handle. Try that with each brand, and talk to some friends who can give you personal experience tips. Good on you for joining UHH as part of your research, most members are very knowledgeable and helpful. Let us know what you choose and how it goes!

As Jerryc41 said, flip a coin and whichever the coin chooses will serve you well. A few years ago I could have asked the same question. I asked Google and did some reading and after reading so much that my mind was turning to mush I came across an article that stated that the Canon had sharper color so I chose Canon. I have since come to the conclusion that whoever wrote that article was full of BS. I’ve seen great photos taken with both. The equipment has much less to do with the results than technique used, composition, proper settings to obtain correct exposure and then skillful Post Production work to crop, adjust and remove unwanted elements. Good luck and welcome to UHH.

As a relative newbie and enthusiast (as opposed to a pro) I routinely see this response to oft-repeated questions like this. While my first inclination was complete agreement, we should consider that by asking this question in the UHH forum, the person is indeed doing the research. Where else can a single search go to so many experts with links to so many resources? Why drive to 5 libraries to research a question when you have the internet?
Angelo - As others have noted, Canon = Nikon so you can't go wrong with either. The best advice, is to go to a camera store and literally handle each candidate. I've happily owned both Canon and Nikon products but I presently use a Nikon D5500 because I like it's compactness and light weight plus the fact that it's more than adequate for my level of expertise and skill. You can obviously afford a more expensive model but I think it still comes down to being comfortable with the heft of the camera, the button locations, etc.
You will be happy with either one!!

I second that vote of approval.

I'm a Canon user. I would also look at the Fuji system for image quality, price and performance. I've been researching this system for a lighter travel system.
