Will the canon 600mm f/4 l mk 2 be limited to f8 with the 1.4 and 2.0 xtenders on a ff camera?
Typically, a 1.4X TC is 1 stop and 2.0X is 2 stops so I would think that you would get f5.6with the 1.4X and f8 with the 2.0X.

I can only go to f8 with the 1.4 on my 100-400 at 400.

Yes, the 600 is supposed to AF with a 2X on f8 enabled bodies ....using CANON 2X III especially.

I'm not concerned with af capabilities. I am questioning how wide I can shoot with the extender on an f4 lens.

Because it’s f5.6 at 400mm without the extender - f8 with a 1.4x

W/1.4x=f5.6 , W/2x=f8 ....??

With the 1.4x it will be f/5.6
with the 2x it will be f/8
Thank you folks for helping me sort this I think in the back of my mind I know this to be true but for some reason I kept wanting to believe that I would be able to shoot faster than 5.6 and 8 with an f4 lens. My husband is retiring in December and told me today that he wants me to buy the camera, long lens and tripod that I want after the first of the year. The camera will b the 1dx mk2. It's the lens that I was hung up on. Need much more reach than the 100-400 mk2 that I have. First choice is the 6O0f/4. But as a bit of cost saving I wondered seriously about the 500 with the extenders. But, and it's a big but, I am always looking for more light with the 7d mk2 and 5ds r that I have now. In love with the speed of the 7d but seriously like what I get with the full frame. Now there are those rumors that canon will be bringing new long lenses to the table next year so now I see new considerations arising to confuse the issue. Oh dear.

The 400 DO II is a much more manageable lens than the 600 or 500 f4's . With the 1.4X becomes 560 5.6 and with 2X becomes 800 f8. With the 5Dsr you can crop - not so much with the 1Dx....but higher ISO's with the 1DX. Send a PM to Nalu here on the Hog - he has all the stuff you are thinking about.....

Thank you for the feedback. Always appreciated. In fact this morning I spent some time going over Nalus earlier posts. Right now I have eliminated the 400 because it's too close to the lens I am using. I want to be able to shoot without the extenders because of the light problem that keeps my shutter speeds to low , or lower than I want to use. So that leaves me needing a camera that can handle higher ISO. That would not be the 5ds r. It is also slow with only 5fps. I'm thinking I will rent the 600 to see if I can handle it physically. That would be the most reasonable way to find out for sure. Thanks again.

IMO, physical lens management ( and support) is a big consideration depending on exactly what your pursuits are. Renting is a GOOD idea !

Right now I use a heavy duty feisol tripod with a Nest gimbal, with either the 5d or 7d ( both with a battery grip) and the 100-400. I can carry it on my shoulder for a couple of miles without too much problem but wouldn't try to hike vertically that way. I'm 5ft 3" and 130 lbs give or take and will b 70 on my next birthday. But you never know what's coming.

Basically-yes. However, certain Canon bodies will allow AF at an aperture above 5.6/8 when using live-view and center-point focus. Included in the list of bodies are the 1-Dx and the 5-DMkIV. Why are you concerned about using f/5.6 for 840mm? Canon's EF800 is an f/5.6 lens. The anticipated EF1000? Canon took almost 16 years to build the much anticipated version II for the 100-400mm. And, when it happens, it won't be cheap. The EF 600 is the most coveted big white on the market, but it weighs its weight. Both the 1-DxMkII and the EF600 are very heavy, much more so than any other body or lens you have mentioned, the camera is almost 3.5 lbs itself.
