Thank you all for the input! I had my heart set on the Canon until I took my camera in for service and was talking to the tech about it, he was the one who suggested the other one, so I thought I would also get other opinions here, I love this forum! I will definitely look at them together!!! Thanks again.

Check out a youtube comparison by Tony Northrup. He seemed to like the Tamron. Only complaint I remember was he claimed the lens was short of the claim of being 200mm. I think he said it was more like 180mm but he liked the quality. Overall, Canon will be the better piece of glass.

I know a lot of people on this site are happy with Tamron but I vowed a few years ago to never buy another. I never had a good experience with one but they were often recommended by camera store personnel. When I upgraded to my Canon 6D a couple of years ago I decided to stick to Canon only lens. If price is an object - as it is with most of us - check out used or refurbished from Canon, KEH or B & H Photo. I've had good experiences with these stores and happy to stick with the Canon quality. I not only purchase Canon but usually Canon L lens and have been very happy.

If you think the Tamron is sharp enough and will focus fast enough for you, get it; however the most recent Canon 70-200 2.8 is really hard to beat in terms of quality. I am amazed at quite a few of the photos users post on how wonderful the Tamron lens is when they are very soft. I had a Tamron lens when I was still shooting Nikon and gave up on it after I borrowed a friend's lens and realized the problem was the lens and not my skills (or lack thereof). Can you rent the Tamron to see if it will work for you?

I've been shooting football for a few years now renting a Canon 70-200 and am now considering buying, however, it was suggested I look into Tamron. Has anyone had any experience with Tamron lenses?

AF and durability should be your main concern - and for that, the Canon wins.

I looked at that G2 model and it doesn't come in a Sony mount of any kind. Tamron does have a non-G model for $798, but I don't know how it compares. The Sony G2 lens is $3 grand...way out of my budget! I rented a 70-400 G2 this past summer and loved it, though, but I've never owned any G glass or a used lens, though I might consider it. Seems like everything is moving to the E-mount which means either an adapter or a whole new system :(
