Getting a grip on high ISOs ... how high is TOO high, for you?

One of my dig cams gets all fouled up when I set it to any other number than the one it was designed to cover. That number is 51,200. If I set it for less ... it doesn't seem to know which way is up, anymore. So, after much experimentation - I've returned it to its maximum threshold. What about you? ... Have you done similar experimentation? ... Which ISO has turned out to be right for you? ... Do you change it, or set on Auto and forget it?

I never use auto ISO and my highest ISO I do not go beyond is 500.
I do prefer though the much lower ISO. I would like ISO 25 but it is
difficult to obtain, so I have to settle for 80.

LF .... that's fine ... but this particular camera wasn't having any .... all kinds of exposure problems at less than max.

I finally decided to put it back to the default - max. ... and all the exp. problems went away ....

So, there it shall remain from now on ...

It doesn't shoot at max, if it doesn't need to ... but this one needs the headroom ....

25,600 on a D3S, 6400 on a D800, 12,800 on a D810 - lower if cropping.

Okay, Gene ...

It would seem from this ... you've chosen to use max capability on the D3S, but not on the later models ....

What made you arrive at those choices, may I ask?

Maxed on all three, though the D3S could go one stop higher

Oh, I see ... I didn't realize the later models were so limited ...

So, you believe, then - in allowing max ISO to deliver the goods, when needed ... do you?

I set mine on 100. I don't raise it unless I have to.

How high you can push the ISO is a function not just of how much noise you can tolerate but of your particular camera sensor and software. With Canon, I can get decent images with the 6D at 25,800 ISO, but could never go near that with the 70D.

In my case, if shooting in low light I try to avoid going beyond ISO 1600. Note that I said in low light.
I have Topaz Denoise which is as excellent software to reduce noise but I use it only when I know the file needs to be salvaged.

I use auto ISO with an upper max of 3200 on a D810

My Canon 6D goes to 25,600 and I routinely shoot my grandson's rock band at that setting (because of usually horrible lighting) and get very usable images using RAW. For normal conditions, I will go to 800 - 1600 if needed with acceptable results.
