Yes it has been discussed hundreds of times, SO? I dealt with this year in and year out as a teacher, a new crop of students with the same questions, over and over.

LR 6 is a standalone app, but adobe crippled it by not putting in all the features and upgrades that the CC version gets. They have also announced that LR 6 is the last of the line - no LR 7 - no more upgrades for LR 6 after this year and no support in the future.

I use both, CC on my desktop and LR 6 on a laptop. There are work arounds for most things missing from LR 6, for now.

The alternate, in my opinion is Corel's Paint Shop Pro X9 (instead of Photo Shop) and After Shot Pro 3 (instead of Lightroom) I have long used Corel's programs but mostly transitioned to PS/LR about 3 years ago. I still use Paint Shop Pro X8 for some features I like better than in Photo Shop. I bought After Shot but haven't taken the time to learn it yet. I am sure I could get along fine without the Adobe products. It is just for now I can afford both, use both etc. Add ons and plugins are sometimes a bit harder to install in Corel than Adobe because they are more or less made for the Adobe products. But this is changing from both ends, Corel is making it easier to install and use the extras and the app writers are making it easier to use them with the Corel products.

You could also consider the Photo Shop Elements which is still stand alone and a sort of mix of lite versions of both Photo Shop and Lightroom.

I still recommend a search. Doing so will give the OP much more info than you gave in your post. Whats so bad about recommending a search here?

Nothing wrong with a search. Just saying that the same questions over and over are a fact of life which most people only run into with their own children and that only a few times.
Some here on the UHH really go after people who have the same old questions like they thought it was done just to irritate them.
Also, some things change, like the end of support etc for LR.

Lr 6 = dead end or orphaned product. $150
Lr Classic CC or Lr CC - lives on. For $120/yr you get Lr and Ps - you can do a complete treatment of an image in Ps, but Lr only has the parametric raw converter (same as Adobe Camera Raw in Ps), and is not suitable for photo finishing. You need layers, masks, local adjustments, custom brushes, etc etc etc that Lr can't provide.

You need to decide if you are satisfied with just proofs, or if you want to learn to truly "finish" an image. Get the subscription and call it a day. If you don't want to pay monthly, then authorize an annual payment of $120 to cover you for a year. If you get Lr 6, and for some reason they issue an Lr 7, you'll be buying the upgrade at some point - same difference - software maintenance is software maintenance and it is only fair that Adobe charge for it. At least you get something valuable in return. I don't suggest you buy outdated software that will not ever be upgraded. A total waste of money.

LR6 will be an orphan by the end of December. LR CC will continue, as will your monthly payments. I have LR6, and I plan to keep using it till it no longer works.

There are many good, less expensive alternatives to Lightroom.

I don't use Search anymore because I've had very limited success with it. Doing a Search for "Lightroom" got me this.

Which of these many discussions will cover what the OP wants to know? If it is an older post, there will be no mention of LR6 losing Adobe support by January 1.

If you decide to, say after Adobe discontinues LR ^ and choose not for whatever the reason to continue with the monthly subscription package how much less is Elements than Lightroom and use Luminar as an "edit in" program?

Lightroom CC Classic and Photoshop CC are, by far, the best photo duo-editing programs in the world. There are other excellent programs available.

I have two comments:
1- I bet that when you were teaching, you had notes to refer to, if for no other reason than to be sure you left nothing out of the lesson. That is what a search will accomplish, the topic has been gone over dozens of times and a search will allow the OP to see a ton of information that one or two posts just will not provide.

2- You probably are right that there will be no LR7 or updates to LR6 but I have never read anything from Adobe that CLEARLY said that; including the full interview with Tom Hogarty. I made this comment on another thread and explained that Adobe has not made the future of LR6 clear. If you have seen an announcement, would you please post the link.

Refine your search. Try Lightroom paid service or something a tad more creative. Search function is there for a reason. One of those reasons is to minimize repetition of same topics and create a knowledge database.

I paid $9.99 per month for the package that includes Creative Cloud Photography plan with Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC, and 20 GB or 1 TB of cloud storage Lightroom CC plan with 1 TB of cloud storage. It can be used on 2 computers at a time. I have it installed on 2 desktops and 2 laptops. I can use it on any combination of 2 computers by just logging out of the other Adobe apps. And if I forgot and left it logged in at home, I can log out of the Cloud at home from my laptop.
This would have cost me 149.00 for Lightroom (which would never be upgraded beyond the current version plus minor corrections for Lightroom only and on one computer. But to equal the $9.99 plan you would also have to purchase Photoshop Stand alone for $999,
I now have the complete plan which has all of their applications which are all kept up to date by Adobe.
