Hi all. Anyone have suggestions for taking landscape photos in western North Carolina or the Ashville area? Going this weekend and would love some suggestions. Thank you.
Get a small airplane ride further west to the Andrews / Murphy North Carolina area. Take pictures of the smoke coming up out of the woods and sell them to the revenuers.
Maybe that is where the term "still" photos came from!
I used to fly into Andrews-Murphy airport on a regular basis. Even on the hottest days of the year you could see smoke from the "fireplaces" in the woods.

Checkout Cataloochee valley, get there early. You might find some deer, and elk to photograph. But I would steer clear of the wild boars, and coyote.
There are some old home steads in the valley, an old one room school-house, and a still on occasion operating old church.
You can visit the Asheville Arboretum and, of course, the Biltmore Estate

I am a volunteer photographer for a hike club located in the Boone, N.C. area. We hike all of the North West N.C. and East TN. trails so I can get some nice shots. If you are interested in hiking I would be glad to talk with you or help you arrange to hike with us. This offer is open to all.
Pictures of hikes and club details are below.

There are more waterfalls in this area than any other area in Eastern United States. The best part about a lot of them is that you park and walk a VERY short distance to view the falls. Check out the area around Brevard. I would caution you however before you drive to that area to check and see if you can find out about their rainfall. The flow on some of those falls might be way down because of the drought conditions. Grandfather Mountain is not that long of a drive from Ashville. Nice view from the top and a hanging bridge over the gorge.

Oh! To be in North Carolina now that summer's here. Visited Western North Carolina in June 2008. Went to Cataloochee Valley; it's a beautiful place but watch out for the Chiggers. Those tiny insects were feasting on me as soon as I got off the path and into the grass. My local relations had a good time laughing and covering me with nail varnish, which does stop the itching. (Fortunately, the varnish was clear and not pink!) I can confirm all the above advice. WNC is well worth a visit because it has a beauty all of its own. Here's a couple of shots of what awaits you in Cataloochee.

Check this,
