I am thinking about upgrading my Canon 60D to an 80D. I don't want to go to a 7D or a full frame. I primarily use my 60D for travel photography, flowers at the local arboretum, and family pictures.

The 80D (body only) is currently on sale for $999 and I can probably get $150 - 175 for trading in my 60D (body only).

Is the 80D substantially better than the 60D?

What features does the 80D have that make it worth the jump from my 60D?

Is it worth waiting to see what the 90D looks like, months or years from now when it eventually comes out?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes. It is substantially better. Try looking at a Canon refurbished model. Better features are sensor, focusing capabilities primarily. It is a step function improvement.

Yes the 80D is a major upgrade from the 60D. 18 MP > 24 MP, 5.3 fps > 7 fps, max ISO 6400 > 16000, viewfinder 96% > 100%, AF points 9 > 45 (up to 27 will focus at f/8.0 depends on lenses used).
And on Canon Store's refurbished site it is $779.99 with a 18-55 lens, in stock. Body alone is $799.99 but out of stock. Watch for specials, it will go down even more. I got one with an extra 15% off at Halloween.

Can someone with the 80D confirm if functions are accessible without going via. the touchscreen. I have a lot of bother with touchscreens, don't know whether it's because I have a 'light' touch, or because my hands are always moisturised. Don't seem to be able to pin it down, sometimes moistening a fingertip helps others not, others I've almost felt like I'm punching the screen with no effect. I just don't seem to be able to activate them as easily as I'd like.

I specifically downgraded and purchased an 80D for video only. I purchased the 80D package direct from Canon (refurbished) which came with a new strap, new battery, and a new 18-55mm IS lens. The camera was not refurbished...in was brand new--outstanding! They even included a $45 view magnifier for a total price of $800.00. 2 day shipping and a 1 year new warranty was included in the package.

I am not a fan of cropped censors which is like downgrading to a cell phone, but for video, this little camera is outstanding with tap screen focusing, follow focusing on a subject, and 60 fps which really improves the clarity while panning the camera. Usually most cameras are out of focus panning until you stop the motion. At 2 lbs. 1.3 oz, using the little camera on a Glidecam is a welcome relief from my heavy 5Ds with battery grips. After seeing the value of buying from Canon Direct, I would never buy new again. Like I said, I got all new equipment without a smudge or fingerprint anywhere--saved $400+. And the video quality is outstanding and being used every day with Real Estate walk through videos.

I am a Canon 80D owner/user and can confirm that camera functions are available through both the menu system and the quick select touch screen. And like most other DSLRs you can also change many settings (ISO, fstop, shutter speed, etc) by use of the buttons and knobs on the camera body.

Yes. I have no trouble with touch screens - writing this on an iPhone - but haven't yet used the touch screen on my 80D. Not to say that I won't, but I can do everything I wish to so far without it.

As already answered, yes, you can change functions without using the touchscreen. Not mentioned, however, is that you can also adjust the "sensitivity" of the touchscreen, so that may help you too.

For me the biggest advantage of the 80D is the f8 AF functionality. It means I can use an extender with lenses that would have lost AF on the 60D. If you do any long lens work like BIF, this is a big deal.

Suffering from a major GAS attack several months ago as I hadn't made any major photography purchases in quite some time, on a whim I ordered the 80D from B&H. Boy o boy was I pleasantly surprised with this offering by Canon. I too was never enthused with the touch screen feature, however since using the 80D I have to say I'm a convert. You can do virtually everything with the touch screen much faster and conveniently. I find it accurate and responsive and now wish my 5D MKII & 7D MKII had this wonderful feature, as well as the articulating screen. You won't be disappointed in the features of this major upgrade from your 60D.

My thought is to keep your 60D and go to the Canon site and look for a refurbished 80D. I bought my 80D around Christmas time last year refurbished and paid $800 for it. A very good camera and looked brand new when I bought it and it had the same warranty as new one ....Rich
