For the clearest pictures on Instagram, what Export / email / settings should I use?

The aspect is a 1x1 crop in the develop module before exporting. I use 132 on the resolution although you'll get an argument about anything higher than 72 being needed.

Instagram will downsample anything larger than 1080 on a side. They will downsample the image if you send anything larger, making it pointless to send them anything larger.

Export resolution doesn't change the image. Here are two images, the first exported at 1080 and a resolution of 40, the second, at 512. Both are the same size in pixels, and both are 270kb.

So, 1080 px x 1080 px is all you need, and the ppi setting in the export dialog changes nothing but a metadata tag that indicates image size, but the file and image themselves look identical and are of the same size.

CHG Canon. Does that change your recommendation. I set up a prest with 2048 pixels and checked it against my old posts and it was definitely clearer.

I wasn't aware of IG's posted specs on 1080 and they'll downsize larger images. But, it doesn't change my own recommendation. I mostly select a unique set of images for use in Instagram. But on occasion, I've found a reason to reuse a square IG image elsewhere where the larger 2048-pixel size is appropriate for that site / usage. It's just simpler to have the image in the 2048 format to begin with rather than revisiting the export processing.

What is useful is to have a LR preset with all the parameters including the target folder for the exported file and then saved as something like IG_export.

Also, although IG now supports landscape and portrait formats, the 1x1 square is still the best display format across the various phone types for the IG app where the phone doesn't have to be tilted, etc ...
