Your welcome Bruce. The Sigma ART series do have a bit more weight to them than other similar lenses. I have the Sigma ART 35mm, and yes, it does have a bit more weight to it than Nikon 35mm 1.4G, 665g to 601g. The Sigma 50MM ART is a beast though compared to the Nikon 1.4G, 815g to 281g.

Happy Thanksgiving to you also.

Vince, I’m curious . . .

Been reading reviews of the 50mm ART lens on Amazon, and 5% of the 227 reviews report focusing issues. Have you experienced any on your Sigmas?

I have not had any focusing issues with the Sigma ART series Lenses Bruce, but I suppose there can be the occasional bad copies out there. Here is some other review info to add to the mix.

I have read of a few bad reviews on B&H that complained about slow or inconsistent auto-focus on both Nikon and Canon versions. Out of 116 reviews for the 50MM ART for Nikon, there were four 1 star reviews, and for the Canon version, one 1 star out of 221. For the 35mm ART for Canon, there were 388 reviews with three 1 star reviews, and for the Nikon version there were four 1 star reviews out of 200. So there are some people complaining about inconsistent or slow auto-focus. Compared to the Nikon 50mm 1.8G, there were 1461 reviews with five 1 star reviews with a few complaints about auto-focus. But 5 out of 1461 is pretty minimal. The Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM had 3666 reviews of which 30 were 1 star reviews, so again very minimal bad reviews

No problem. Glad to be able to offer some useful info if I can.

My Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR II auto-focuses like ‘zip’, and usually exactly where I want focus. On the other hand, the 50mm f/1.4 G I’ve had for years is more like ‘uh-zip’. It’s been the one frustrating aspect of the lens. Other than that, it yields great images. Reading reviews online indicates that I’m not the only one who feels this way.

So, I’ve been searching for alternatives, and there doesn’t appear to be one. Even the thousand-dollar Sigma ART lens has a few negative reviews.

Have any of you dealt with this? If so, where’d you land? Thanks.

I have the Nikon 50mm f.14 D lens on a Df and it's just a quick as any other lens I have.

Yes, both of my ‘D’ lenses are suitably faster than the 1.4 G. I’d really like to stay with the motor in the lens. May talk to Nikon, too.

I really like the 50mm aspect but my Nikon 50mm 1.4G gives so-so results as far as sharpness on the D750. I recently acquired a Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art and very pleased with sharpness from center to edge on the D750. It is heavy but very well-built and a nice looking lens, while my Nikon 50mm 1.4 feels cheap bc of all the plastic. I am now seriously considering acquiring a Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art. Just sharing some thoughts ...

Appreciated. These testimonies help give perspective. I’m seriously considering the ART lens. I’m even fantasizing about a 24, 50, 85 trio! :-)

I had EXACTLY your problem. I bought a Sigma 50 1.4 ART and sold my Nikon. Never been happier. Well built and highly rated. Expensive and heavy. I have two other Sigma ART lenses, a 24-120/4 and a 135/1.8. Best of luck.

I followed your lead, Chris. Picked up a new Sigma 50 ART today and went to a local lake to try it out. It is truly an impressive lens. In fact, I believe the entire ART series are such. While at the store, I tried a 24mm and an 85mm on my D610. All three ART lenses I've seen thus far seem to be quality stuff.

As Nike says . . . . Just Do It! I'm thrilled with the copy I got today.
