Just because it is a kit lens doesn't mean it's junk. Canon has L series kit lenses and the 1 Nikkor kit lens I own retails for over $1000. People who say all kit lenses are junk simply don't know what they are talking about.

I agree with you assessment re kit lenses. Some are really pretty nice. I can't help but ask, which Nikkor kit lens you are referring to that is a bit pricey?

Well, that is a one way to emphasize their "importance and knowledge." Let them have it.
I've had excellent results with the Nikon 18-55 VRII and the 55-210 OSS. The only downside is the cheap plastic mounting rings on those lenses. Anyone have any problems with that mounting ring on the kit lenses?

I think plastic mounting rings are a bonus. If you drop your camera and the ring breaks it's a less than $5 fix. If it were a metal ring think of the damage that could be done to the camera lens mount. - dave

Others have said it cost them $100 plus postage/insurance to have it repaired/replaced at a Nikon Service Center. Where do you get it fixed for "less than $5"?

Sorry, I forget some folks can't unscrew four screws and take whats left of the old mount off and replace it with less than $5 one from eBay. - Dave

Thanks for the tip Dave. Just bought one off of Ebay for $4.95 shipped to keep as a spare. Now that I have one as a spare I'll likely never need it. Good insurance though.

Probably the 24-120 f/4. I also have this "kit" lens and find it very sharp for a zoom of this range.
