The web seems to say American coot but photo just taken in the Rhine river so what is it?
Don't know about the American part but definitely looks like a coot to me.

Dave appears to be a Eurasian Coot.
It's a very nice bird....whatever his name is.

Coot (Fulica atra) is the European coot. Fulica americana is the American coot.

Eurasian Coot, I believe.
I don't see the frontal reddish shield on the front of the forehead. So, the location and lack of the shield puts my money on a Eurasian Coot.
