Cheering up Mom

My parents were never big on family portraits, but they did dedicate one wall of their house, the one right outside my father's office, to photos of family members, many of them taken by Dad himself. Then during the summer, due to Dad's health problems, my folks decided to put their house on the market and move into an assisted living facility, the idea of which my mother ABHORRED; yet it was the only way for them to stay together. For some reason that wall was the first to be cleared of all its framed photos. Dad was already in the new place and I suppose he wanted them there with him--I don't know. As some of you read earlier, this move never occurred because my father fell in his temporary apartment, having evidently decided he could walk on his own which he could not, and hit his head so hard that, after twelve days of really trying to hang on, he died (at home, with his Tucson mountain view and his kitties, and with Hospice).

Our tiny family is trying to adjust to my father's absence but of course we each have our stumbling blocks. On one thing we all agree: that wall which once housed family portraits is now depressing in its blankness, yet Mom doesn't want to put the original pictures back up. So my sister said to me, "Well you have thousands of photos--pick out some to have framed and I'll pay for them. We need to fix that wall."

Here are the ones I chose, taken near the Peloncillo Mountain Wilderness in southeast AZ, on one of my innumerable trips to Tucson this summer. I was on my way home (to NM; these may be the only photos I've posted NOT taken in NM) when I made an impromptu side trip. Dad was gone and I just needed some fresh scenery, and I felt his presence strongly. He was always one for taking unsuited cars on unsuitable roads, and he was my main inspiration towards photography...anyway, I hope these photos, which will be printed as canvas wraps from Bay Photo, will make a nice grouping to brighten that dreary wall.

I hope they help soothe the emptiness of the loss of your loved one.

Thank you. As long as I've lived in the southwest U.S., I'm still amazed at the opulent displays these plants put on.

We'll get there. I saw my mother over the weekend and as much as she misses Dad, she's glad he doesn't have to continue struggling. Within a few months I hope to post a photo of those prints on her wall.
