It really depends. I have used the Sigma 18-250 and 18-300 lenses. I am quite happy with both. HOWEVER, I never print larger than 8 X 10 and am not a pixel peeper. Lenses with a high zoom ratio are a compromise. Whether or not you will be happy with such a lens is a personal thing. The best advice I can give is RENT the lens you are considering, use it extensively for a week and decide if you are happy with the results.

When anyone sees your photo, will they know what camera and lens you are using?

Hi, I have a Pentax k-70 and am looking for a general all purpose lenses. I am considering an 18mm-300mm lenses. I have read varying reviews and wondered what everyone's opinion is on this type of lense. I have heard that they are not so good at the low and high end of the range. Is this your experience as well? Thanks so much in advance for your insight.

I have a Pentax K50 with a Sigma 18-300 and thought it was a great investment until Tamron came out with the 18-400 lens

It depends on what level of quality you are comfortable with. I was ok with the Nikkor 18-200 VR, except at 200mm, where it was pretty mediocre. I have yet to see images produced with a 18-300 from any mfgr that I thought was "good" - but that's just me. Your criteria may be different.

As far as being a good investment, there are other ways to invest your money than buying a third party lens, or camera gear in general - unless you are talking about Leica, which are among the few cameras that actually appreciate in value.

If you are literally asking if this lens is a good investment then know that it is a rare piece of photo gear that maintains its value over time. As far as the optical quality of the lens, its mediocre but then all lenses with extreme zoom ratios are compromised.

My Nikon 18-300 has become my main everyday vacation and walk around lens when I don’t need my fast glass (which is most of the time.) The range covers almost everything. For a busy day I’ll throw in my 12-24 of even my fisheye. I ran all the tests for perfect f stops and end of range quality failure and have been unable to see any of the problems some people talk about. Nikon makes two of these for DX cameras and I bought the more expensive one. I routinely print 16x20 or 17x23, sometimes with severe cropping, and it holds up just fine. It’s weak point for me is poor bokeh. Not the best f stops for that.

I have been using a Sigma 18-250. I love it. It a about all you need when traveling. I also have a Sigma 18-300, just never needed it.
