hi hogs

i've been using and loving my sony a7r2 for a few months and have been finally getting down to the brass tacks about learning all the ins and outs. I'm going to japan and want to be proficient with my camera.
today i was watching lots of instructional videos and using lots of settings and controls on the camera. all of a sudden, it LOCKED UP. i can turn it on but the screen is blank (with the M letter showing). can't press the shutter or use menu settings. I've read to take the battery out for a day and see what happens.

anyone have any experience with this?? so frustrated!

thanks

With complicated gear comes complicated problems. I suspect that following along with the videos and changing so many settings so quickly got the poor little guy confused. Removing the battery is a good idea, but a whole day isn't necessary. Thirty seconds should be plenty of time. While the battery is removed, turn the camera on and press the shutter button a few times. That supposedly removes any residual charge.

Let us know how this turns out. You're not the only one to experience this.

I consulted David Busch's book to see if there was anything that would cover your situation. I didn't find anything, but I did learn that there is a second, inaccessible battery built-in that provides power to maintain settings etc. I have no idea if that is connected to your problem. However, Sony's are intended to be charged in-camera by USB connection. If you have been using an external charger in lieu of USB connection for a long time, it is possible that the internal battery has been depleted. This is just speculation, I have no idea if it will work, but try turning it off and leaving it on a USB connection for a good long charge. Good luck.
