I generally stick with Use Original and for me that means 4x6. If I find that this doesn't work for another print format I can go back to the original file and change it.

Somehow I get the sense that the OP here is one and the same with the annoying ChrisT - asking theoretical questions of little merit with the apparent intent of getting a lot of responses.

Cropping is always, I believe, subjective. Central interest in the image, role and sugnificance of secondary interet points, nature of message desired to be conveyed. Picture frame size seens to be of negligible importance.

I firmly believe cropping is a SIGNIFICANT percentage of a good photograph. I think cropping, frequently, separates a snapshot from a photograph. That being said... after a session, what is the best crop size for clients who do not specify a preference... or, ...when editing a large number of photos from a trip, what size should the crop be for unspecified future use?

I usually crop to 11x14 x 300 but what I include in that depends on the image. It is also not a hard and fast rule. Some images look better at 8x16 or some other format. The image rules.

If you’re looking for something universal, forget it. There is no universal aspect ratio. There is no universal crop percentage, either.

It depends on the end use. TV? Magazine? Family album? Facebook or other social media? It also depends on the subject and the compositional skills of the photographer.
