Hello everyone, I love checking out Ugly Hedgehog daily.
The wife and I were out west a week ago and I took my Nikon D90 which hasn't ever seen much use. Sometimes but not always the integral flash would pop up and all the shots I took were in bright daylight. Being a novice I don't have a clue as to what is going on. Any thoughts?

Welcome to UHH. My sense is that you have the ISO set to low. Check your ISO setting. The other possibility? Your camera showing the 1st signs of an on-board problem. They only get worse.

Welcome to our forum!
There is a setting on the Mode Dial next to Auto. It's Auto without the flash. Check out Ken Rockwell's user's guide.

Welcome to the UHH! Are you accidentally bumping the Flash Button? Also from Ken Rockwell, pressing it pops the flash up:
Flash Bolt +/- Button (right side of flash hump as seen from front) top
Press this to pop up the flash.
