I have been shooting with my recently purchased Nikkor AF-S 200-500 . Just curious about others reactions and experience with the lens. I also uae it with the Nikon 1.4 teleconverter. So far, I am pleased.

This was (HITS Saugerties) taken with the lens. Apparently, I like it! There are other pictures on my user. I used it for the eclipse also.

I have one and am pleased. I've obtained a lot of tack sharp images with it and if there is a mess-up, it is usually me.

I've had the Nikkor AF-S 200-500mm lens for 18 months now, usually mounted on my D7200 or occasionally on my D5100 and have never been disappointed in its performance. Any time there has been a missed or screwed up shot it has always been my fault. It will be in my camera bag on my trip to South Africa and Switzerland next May.

I enjoyed that same Manfrotto gimbal. The 1.4 was so-so for me.

It is simply the best Nikon telephoto zoom for the price. I have sold my 300 2.8 and 200-400 4 in favor of this lens. I shoot it off the D500 with GROUP AUTO FOCUS. My keep rate is 98% and this lens is also super sharp at 6 f.3 to f 8.
I do not use teleconverters, on the D500 I can reach out to 750mm, if this is not long enough, the subject is too far to shoot with this lens.
It has always been my belief through experience that any teleconverter will lesson IQ. And, if you are using one with this lens, you are also reaching through a lot of air and it just complicates things that you don't need.
Anyone here that tells you there is NO loss in IQ using a teleconverter just don't know what they are talking about.

It has a good zoom range and is very good optically considering the price.

It hunts excessively in low light/contrast scenes.

It is a great lens if you have sufficient light.

Although I wish that Nikon had made it a 500mm f5.6 since that is where I use it nearly all the time. The weight reduction and slightly better optics would better serve many people like myself who are avid birders.

The Canon and Sigma 400mm f5.6 lenses come to mind. The former is still available (lucky Canon shooters) but the latter has long since disappeared.

I have now shot the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens for two years in Florida wetlands in the mornings in poor light. I have noticed NO low contrast in low light yet. Maybe your referring to another Nikon lens. And the shots in low light are very good, reveling my Nikon 300 f 2.8 and my Nikon 200-400 f4 lenses.

Great information, affirming my positive first impressions using the lens. I fully agree about the effect of air in tele shots. I''ll only use the converter for exceptions.
