Adobe is not going to sell any more DVDs or offer updates for light room! They will only continue lightroom in the cloud for a monthly fee. I sure hope this won't extend into Photoshop and Elements. I personally don't want to have to go on to the net to process my work, and am not wanting to be herded into that corral like livestock. Yes I understand it's my 82 years pushing back at new technology, but I just wanted to vent: Larry

Just a quick FYI - all the Creative Cloud applications reside on your computer as do all your images - you only depend in the internet for updates and occasional check-ins to the Adobe servers to make sure your account is up to date.

With Adobe subscription the program (Light room Classic) is downloaded to your computer. All work is processed on your computer. You do not need to be online to use any of it.

To be fair they said

"We don't want [the name change] to be perceived as a lack of investment, or a lack of effort with that product. It is very good at what it was designed to do, which is manage files and folders on disk. All of those desktop-local workflows that photographers told us about during our first Lightroom Public Beta back in 2006, we are absolutely going to continue investing in. It's a different team."

There is no mention of how long they will continue investing and as indefinitely means as long as we feel like (for stand alone) it is no reassurance at all.

Currently Lightroom Classic requires OSX 10.12 Sierra. That's a forced upgrade until Apple won't let you upgrade anymore. Is adobe going to support older versions of lightroom classic when a new version of OSX comes out?

They forced an OS update between 5 and 6 so it is likely they will continue to do so.

With Lightroom classic you are relying on Adobe's Servers to say carry on every couple of months, as soon as they decide it isn't what they want to do, it stops working.

But you should be ok with Lightroom classic , for a while anyway.

I've had Photoshop for over 15 years. Got Lightroom when it first came out. Upgraded about every other time back then on both of the programs. I bet I spent more than an average of $9.99 month if I was to figure it out. I think both of the programs today are the best on the market at the cost of a restaurant lunch once a month. I don't like the monthly either but I do want a program that is easy to use, Lightroom, and a great final editing program with layers and special adjustments, Photoshop.

Some of the competitors out there are up there in price and they will have upgrades one a year and charge for that. I bet if you were to look back over the next couple of years you wouldn't save more than $20 a year one way or the other. I like my photography and I will spend $9.99 a month having fun.

You are misstating the Adobe Creative Cloud system. For Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom CC your images still reside locally. With Lightroom CC, your images are synched to your Adobe Cloud Storage and then to your desktop/laptop installation of Lightroom Classic CC or Lightroom CC. Even more useful if you have Lightroom CC on a Smartphone, since the camera app is far superior to the native OS application.

Lightroom CC's utility is for tablets and/or smartphones where you have limited storage for RAW files and need to get them to the cloud and to your desktop.

Larry, it is 2017, time to get with the program. You pay a monthly fee for cable, for your newspaper, for insurance, what is the difference?

Adobe offers the Lightroom program on a subscription basis only now, as it has done for a while with Photoshop. This does not mean they are "on the cloud." The cloud refers to a computer space on someone's else's server that you can store your images on, in this case Adobe's server: your subscription-based application is placed on your own, personal computer; it is up to you to choose where you want to store your images, either on your computer (in your home), an external hard drive (in your home), or on Adobe's server, the Cloud. You do not process on the "net." You process at home using your own equipment. Your limitation with Adobe is that they will no longer offer any stand-alone applications, as they have done in the past. I'm not sure about Elements, that could still be a stand-alone application and perhaps someone else will have that information.

It has already happened to Photoshop a long time ago, and no, you do not need to go online to work in those programs!

Larry, you sound like one of those guys who believes everything they read on the internet.

Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC 2018 reside on your computer. You don't "process" your work online. You don't even have to be connected to the internet in order to use either application. Once in a while - probably once a month for a couple of seconds, Creative Cloud will connect and verify your account is up to date with their authentication server, and that's about it. They will not pull the plug on you if you have no connection, either. I have several friends that are routinely on assignment in remote areas without internet access for 6-8 weeks at a time with zero interruption in use of Creative Cloud applications.

Adobe (and others) have solved a significant logistics problem by using Cloud-based software distribution. Everyone is on the same version, up-to-date, all the time. There are a few holdouts still running old versions of Photoshop, but they are going away because of the compelling benefits of having current software. Oh, and they managed to drop the price from $700 for a CS6 license and $150 for a Lightroom license to $120/yr for both. It cost me a fortune to keep my software current. The cloud solution really is cheaper and better, and with zero downside.

You can relax and stop venting. No one is twisting your arm. But you may want to consider the new information I presented in this post.

A couple of years ago I chose to buy LR6 rather than rent Lightroom CC, as I did not fancy the monthly payments. Because I own a Nikon and an Olympus and use them side by side it made sense to use LR6 rather than the free processing software offered by both companies (I didn't like either anyway). I have all the lenses I require and as both cameras represent the latest offerings in their niche, I will not be upgrading in the forseable future. So, in fairness, this news should not affect me. As an aside, someone who's blog I follow recently attempted to cancel his LR CC subscription and it made amusing reading. It took him some time to persuade 2 x Adobe call centre operators (yes, it took two lengthy phone calls - no facility to do so on-line) that he really did want to cancel his subscription.

I just can't wrap my mind around Adobes monthly charge. I do not trust cloud storage. With so many alternatives out there for less or free is my route besides I would rather eat that lunch at a restaurant once a month.
