I have a Nikon 85mm 1.4 AIS lens. The helical is damaged badly. I took it to a repairman, and he said Nikon no longer has parts for such an old lens.

Is that true, or did he not want to bother with my lens?

If he is authorized Nikon, then it's true. If not, then he can't get parts because he is not authorized repair. Nikon has tight control over parts, manuals, specialized tools and support to repair their equipment.

Check here for parts.
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=nikon+d80&_osacat=98924&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XNikon+85mm+1.4+part.TRS0&_nkw=Nikon+85mm+1.4+parts&_sacat=98924

They've sold for quite a lot on ebay, so I hope you can get it repaired.

I have a friend who has a business repairing camera equipment.
He encounters two problems when trying to fix lenses:
1. As Gene51 mentioned above, in some cases the manufacturers refuse to sell him the parts.
This is increasingly becoming the situation.

2. Even if the manufacturer is willing to sell him the parts, they don't stock parts longer than
the warranty period for the short time most lenses are in production.
Depending on the manufacturer, that means in some cases that if a lens is more than 2 years old
there are no parts available!

When you need repair to say your car. Do you always get OEM parts or aftermarket??

Go to the Nikon site and enter the information as if you were scheduling a repair. They will let you know if they or any of their authorized repair facilities can fix it.

My part 2?
All I can say is that my friend has been repairing lenses and cameras for over 28 years
and he regularly has this experience. Someone comes in with a lens that needs
repair and he checks with the manufacturer and is told that parts are no longer available.

I myself have had this problem although with lenses that were more than 10 years old.
My friend tells me he has had this problem with lenses that were only 2 years old-
no parts.

The only authorized service center brand I see mentioned is Kodak.

A couple of years ago I had Nikon repair 2 lenses that were easily 10 years old. It could be your friend deals with local supply houses that can't afford to stock parts for everything that isn't current. Your assertions may be true in some cases. I don't think they hold water as a blanket statement.

There aren't many independent repair businesses left
because of Part 1 of my statement above- the companies
refuse to sell parts to independents.

This happened recently with a Sigma lens I inquired about-
Sigma refused to sell the parts to my friend Doug.

In the past, my experience with the price of repairs
was that Doug charged about 1/3 of what the manufacturers
would charge. But if he can't get the parts that is a moot point.

My friend the camera repair guy has had to adjust to "the new reality"
so he tells me that a good part of his business now is just cleaning camera sensors.
He will go to a camera club and clean dozens of cameras over a period of two hours.
Because of the volume, he charges only $20 per camera compared to the normal $50.

You're right about that. I don't think we have many independents who aren't authorized service centers for at least a few brands. Probably because it's the only way to get parts.

Bill de,
You are right. I think Doug told me that there are only two independent
photographic repair shops in all of Canada.
When he started, 28 years ago, all of the brands would sell to him;
now, most of them won't. They have locked up the business!

The equivalent in the automobile world would be-
if you own a Ford vehicle, the ONLY place you can get it repaired
is at a Ford dealership, because Ford refuses to sell their parts
to anyone else. That would be a shock!

In my 44 years of owning cars, I've dealt with independent repair shops
more than with dealer repair shops.
