Be very careful about accepting free legal advice/opinion here or anywhere else. For example, if you take a street shot and publish it someplace, and a person in the picture takes you to court for invasion of privacy, what will you use in your defense? “Well, a guy on one of the photo forums said it was ok”? I’m pretty sure the Judge would get a good giggle out of that…

Their defense will be decades of precedence. The subject of privacy in public is settled law. http://ir.lawnet.fordham.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1598&context=faculty_scholarship

Great input... thanks... will read later... I guess the message is to bring your own Council to court, don't rely solely on "what you read somewhere"...

You should not post pictures of children. There are women and children hiding from nasty people and many of those nasty people troll the internet looking for pictures of them to pop up. This is sad but dangerously true.

Is it ethical to post street photos of people on UHH do you think? I have some shots of New Orleans that I'd like to post, but I don't want to do the wrong thing.
I would appreciate your thoughts.
Jude.

Back 2010 in Linz, Austria I was in a public mall and took a picture of a guy "palm reading" a girls hand. The first picture was taken from a distance. Later I went up to them to talk, both were conversant in English. I showed them the picture! They thought I could get a better one if they "posed" for it. I then took the second one. Moral of the story is how you interact with the subject.

All very interesting opinions. I guess my original question was not so much a question of the legalities (though I'd hate to be sued), more from a morally ethical point of view. For example, the guy in the frozen standing position. He is there on the street wanting people to see him, and give him money for his fascinating pose. There are a lot of people on UHH these days who would see the photo, but I don't think he would object to being posted.
I have no interest in selling, but would not like to post a pic of a person if I felt that person would be embarrassed. I have other photos of people that I would not post, as I feel would be an invasion of their privacy. (Wouldn't like to see meself on UHH half naked and drunk lol, even if it was a great photo.) I guess it comes down to a personal thing, where to draw the line.
So I was curious to hear what other Hoggers felt about the issue. Thanks for your replies, Jude.

Yes I agree. Very sad but true. I have great pics of my grandkids but would not post them on Uhh for this reason. Even facial pics. How sad.

The second one is a great photo...look at Mum photobombing at the back.
