I remember a recent post on this subject but when I did a search, I couldn't find it. I need a monitor to attach to my hp laptop and am totally confused. Its primary purpose will be for post processing. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Dell SE2717HX. That's from memory, but I think it's right. We have two of them in the house - very nice (monitor, not house. )

You are not likely to find a display suitable for post processing with a gamut of at least 100% sRGB and a bit depth of 8 bits per color for $200 and certainly not less. Save your $$ and wait until you can get a proper display. The gamut of your laptop is probably about the same as a $200 display.

My biggest complaint with my laptop monitor is knowing whether I'm viewing it from the correct angle. Tilt it one way the the image is too dark . . .the opposite way and it looks blown out! And it's small. As for the $$$, I could spend more if needed, I'm just conservative by nature. Can you tell me what requirements I should look for in a monitor? Thanks for your time.

I like (and use) a Dell 2413, but I use a 10 bit workflow, and though this display is 8 bit and uses FRC to simulate 10 bit, it does have a 12 bit LUT so the results are actually very good. Not quite in Eizo, NEC or HP Dreamcolor territory, but certainly fine for what I do. I think you can get an 8 bit display that does not use FRC to simulate 8 bit from a 6 bit display in the range of about $300 from ASUS or DELL, I just don't have the time to look up the model numbers - but one thing is certain - a $200 display is likely just 6 bit.

As far as laptops are concerned, Lenovo, Dell, Sager and MSI sell laptops with IPS displays, so you don't have the issue of viewing angle for color and brightness accuracy.

Minimum 8 bit color accuracy, IPS or H-IPS technology, at the very least 100% sRGB gamut, and a positive review from www.tftcentral.co.uk

I settled on an Acer G257HU that I believe meets your criteria. It had good reviews for post processing which is mainly what I want it for. I ending up spending a bit more than I planned on . . .but at least I didn't waste $$ on a cheap monitor that wouldn't do the job!!!
