I currently shoot with a D7100. On my recent trip out west I found my 18-70 lens to be rather disappointing. It would often stick while zooming and the auto focus sometimes wouldn't work. I want to replace it with either a Nikon 16-80 or the 16-85. The range suits my needs perfectly and they have VR which I now know would help me a lot. I am an amateur /enthusiast level who shoots landscapes and streetscapes with occasional interiors.
I'm looking for suggestions fellow Hogs! Thanks!

Bob, I would suggest the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens

That extra 2 mm on the wide end makes a big difference with interiors, plus the 16-80 is a f/2.8-4.
The OP said the 16-80 or 85 met his focal range needs.

I used that lens all through China this year.

I bought the 16-85 with the Nikon D7100 a few months after the camera came out. I love the combination and use it specifically for the subjects you list. The VR is a significant aid under many circumstances, as long as you realize that it does not stop subject movement. I print high quality 13x19 inch borderless prints from my hand held shots, but I do chose pictures that do not require much cropping.
I have not used the newer 16-80, but I doubt that you would see any difference in quality unless you are a pixel-peeper.
I have bought all of my recent (Nikon) lenses as refurbs, and am very happy with the like new results.

Both of the lenses you mentioned are very good lenses. The 16-80mm is sold as a kit lens with the Nikon D500. Kit lenses are sometimes associated with cheap. This lens is not in the cheap category, such as the Nikon18-55mm kit lens.

I used the previous version of the 16-80 on my D7000 for many overseas trips and found it to be just right. The new 16-80 is faster (f2.8 vs f3.5 at the wide end) and has the golden 'N' indicating Nano crystal coating on the lens. I'd recommend the 16 - 80.

Bob, I have the Nikon 16-80 f2.8-f4 lens and am very happy with it.
Thanks everyone! As an FYI, I have Nikon 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8 plus a Nikon 70-300. These lens worked great. I understand the advantages of the 2.8 min. aperture and the nano coating with the newer 16-80. My follow up question is how the IQ compares between the two based upon actual use. I have read a number of reviews but prefer educated users like yourselves.
I have the newer 16-80 that came with my D500. The 2 Nikkor lenses I use the most for general photography are the 16-80 and the 28-300. The 16-80 is a really nice lens, a little pricy if purchased by itself but it was a bargain purchasing it as the kit lens with the D500.

Since when have the OP's needs been relevant?

My recent D500 came with the 16-80 lens, I already had the 24-120 for my D810. Really like the 16-80, nice range, very, very sharp and the lens hood is unique in design. I believe this would make a great lens for you. You will not be disappointed.
