I saw a praying mantis climbing on my screen. I used a Canon EOS 5D with a Tamron 28-300mm lens and a Kenko-Tokina 2x extender at 5.6 and manual focus to capture its eyes. They seemed to get larger as I approached with my tripod. I could be wrong, but I believe that the white dots in the eyes are the reflections of the sun over my shoulder.
Nice! Mantises are way cool, and fun to watch. The white dots are reflections of light. The black spots are called 'pseudopupils'. These are parts of the eye that directly face the viewer, and there you don't see much light reflected from the surface so they look black. Because these spots always directly point at the viewer, the insect always looks like it is looking at you. Which in fact it is because they have pretty good vision.
That's the last thing seen by many insects.
Wow! Excellent shots, Base_fiddle!
