jerry, very interesting links. I see that overall the Sigma has an edge on the Tamron 150-600 but I have no regrets buying the Tamron 150-600. I really like the the fact that the Sigma has soft locks at all the key focal lengths other than at 150. The Tamron does not. When I use the Tamron, I use it with the gimbal, a cable shutter release and I set my D750 for a 3 second shutter delay.

No such a thing as a Sigma 100-600.

I used a Sigma 150-600mm Sport to get the first shot (on a Nikon D850) and the second shot shows just how far away the heron was using a normal lens and the little white spec in the center of the photo is the heron.

The D850 and your Zeiss 85mm Miliva f1.4 I predict would give an excellent image. Nice combo.

I have the Contemporary version of this lens and use it for birds and astrophotography. I also bought Sigma's extender for this lens for sooting the eclipse in August.

I researched the C and S versions and went with the C. The S is slightly sharper at 600mm but the rest of the focal range they are nearly equivalent. (The C is actually sharper around 400mm if memory serves). Since I shoot mostly sports, the incremental sharpness is not a deciding factor. For BIF, i would go with Gene51 feedback as the value in a bird photo (after composition and "action capture" ) is in the feather and eye detail....and sometimes the difference between "really good" and stunning.

Reality is that 90% of your images are at 600mm so you will need to figure out if that extra sharpness at 600mm (plus absolute tank-like durability of the S ) is worth the 2x price and 1.5x weight penalty.

I would look at the Tamron G2 if you cant decide between the S and C sigma. It price sits midway between the S and C and gets raves for its IQ.

I own the Sigma Sport version. It is a decent lens, but nowhere near as good, or as useful as a fast 400, 500 or 600. For the price, and for the weight savings, it is a great lens, but it's no replacement for the 'Big Guns".

I have the Contemporary version which I use on a tri-pod and gimbal head. Couldn't be happier for my advanced amateur needs.

You are right the big lenses from Nikon gives a superior bokeh compared to the Sigma Sport, I own the Nikon 300mm f2.8 G VRII and the Nikon 200-400mm f4 G VRII which as you say are superior lenses.

Love when someone comes over while I am shooting a football game and they show me they "got the shot" with their 100mm lens and then I show them the close up of the QBs face grimacing inside his helmut as he is getting crunched. ... another fellow photog converted to the long lens fraternity :-)

This demo showed here will no doubt convert many more.... well done.

I rented the Sigma 150-600 Sports, the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, and the Tamron 150-600 G2. One week each. Walked around the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, Ramona Grasslands, San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, the beaches. 10-12 hours a day. I wound up choosing the Tamron 150-600 G2. I have the Sigma Sport version, and you say it had the propensity to take under-exposed pictures, I don't find that mine does, but that is not the fault of a lens it depends on what your exposure triangle is.

Sigma 150-600 C owner. $750 at BB last year around Black Friday. Love the lens, Image stabilisation works great for handheld pics and is customizable with Sigma Dock.

If you have the time, renting lenses is the way to go. You will spend more money upfront, but will avoid the buyers remorse of I shoulda or coulda. I rented a Nikon D610 for a week before deciding on buying the D750.
