Traveling with Lithium Ion Batteries

Viking Ocean Cruises in there small print states that lithium ion batteries are not permitted on there ocean cruise ships. I called Viking and the representative said they were permitted however, when I asked for that in writing he sent and email stating that cameras with batteries are permitted in carry on luggage, NO MENTION OF A LITHIUM ION BATTERY.

I would like to hear if any one has carried or tried to carry lithium ion batteries on board a Viking Ocean Cruise ship and what there experience was.

We cruised with Princess Cruises this past summer to Alaska. Carried on my camera bag with three batteries in in it and and had no problem. I would suggest you carry on all your camera batteries whether flying or sailing. Either way you shouldn't have any problems. I doubt they will strip search your camera mnag. It will go through the scanner, but again you shouldn't have any problems. Princessw made the same statement before we cruised, but between cameras and cell phones, there's just no way they can prevent it... just carry them in your camera bag as carry on and you should be alright...

The battery installed in the camera is acceptable, spare batteries typically are NOT acceptable if they are discovered.

I took mine through the airport and onboard ship without any problems. I did have them in small plastic storage cases that I bought on eBay. You shouldn't run into any problems...

You can find these at Michael's, hobby stores, and possibly photography stores...

Thanks for prompt reply. Makes me feel better. I am planning on taking 3 batteries for Sony RX100 5. The batteries are very small 1.5"x 1" x .25" so hopefully they will be overlooked.

I assume it is just making the battery easier to find. The plastic box would not contain a fire if the battery broke into flame. The airlines don't want them in the baggage because a fire, if started, would not be spotted early, while if with you, you'd become aware rapidly.

Even the airlines don't prevent you from carrying them - ideally, though, they should be packed in cases that prevent them from shorting out against something metallic, which could cause them to get hot and burst into flames. I recently flew overseas with three extra camera batteries and two extra flashlight batteries without problem.

Li ion batteries are not just one thing. There is more than one chemistry. There are different anode cathode builds. The earliest Li ion batterys had one pure Li anode or cathode - these were very fire susceptible because of the large negative Gibbs Free energy for the Li to Li-oxide reaction. Pure Li metal must be covered with a substance to 100% block oxygen. My thesis on Li nucleation and precipitation in Silicon required me to coat silicon with a Li-petrolatum grease, so I have direct experience on Li oxidation.

This is the reason why I use the plastic cases. They won't contain a fire, but can prevent one from happening...

My Nikon batteries came with a little plastic thing which fits tightly over the top of the battery, protecting the contacts.
