Shipping Matted Prints

I was wondering what methods different Ugly HedgeHog members employ to ship their matted prints. I’ve always hand delivered mine, but need to ship a 13” x 19” print on an 18” x 24” mat.

I was thinking of using the Uline 24” x 18” “Jumbo Kraft Easy-Fold Mailer.” My plan was to enclose the print and matt in a ClearBags Protective Closure Bag, then either sandwich them between two sheets of cardboard, or use bubble wrap, and then place the contents into the Easy-Fold Mailer.

I’d appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

What I do is get from Home Depot Wood Veneer and they do not charge to cut it for you. 22 x 28. Insert your matter print in your clear poly bag.

Sandwich between the veneer and seal with gray gaffer tape. Any questions PM me. I ship via USPS. Have been doing this for many years. The wood does not allow any flex or damage.

It will increase your shipping cost quite a bit, but it's worth it. For that size, you need something stronger than cardboard. One problem with the suggested material is that when cut, the edges splinter. That creates a hazard for the recipient, and the splinters may end up all over the inside of your package. There are other good alternatives. The first one that comes to mind is gatorboard. It comes in different thicknesses.

When I'm shipping large prints, I cut pieces of the foam insulation material for each side. It's pretty thick, but so lightweight it doesn't increase the shipping cost. The problem is finding a box the right dimensions for the piece(s). The foam insulation is available at DIY home stores in the insulation department.

Back in the film days I learned very quickly that mail carries cannot read. DO NOT BEND meant nothing to mail carriers. They would always bend everything just to fit it in the mail box. You have to ship large photos along with something they can not bend. Better yet, hand deliver it or have the customer pick it up.
